Yeah that’s what it seems like to me too.

Mmmm…I don’t think I would be ok with this.  I would rather have a baby shower and receive some of the things I need as opposed to making a lottery out of it.  A shower is much more standard in my area.

I’ve heard of this but more in reference to one of the baby shower games.  The attendees choose the date/time of baby’s birth and whomever wins (obviously the shower is before the birth) will get a prize later.  I’ve not heard of it where you actually do it for money.

Sounds fun! Doesn’t have to be with money but if the people want to play just to test their predictive powers, guessing dates. I had my friends guess dates (with no money) so that I would have something to look forward to each day nearing and after my due date. Kinda like a bond with the person who chose that date. They threw me a shower and nobody brought up money…it was just for fun. 🙂 This is coming from someone who put a “guess the gender of our baby” as my Facebook post before we went in for the ultrasound. Tons of people responded and I liked looking at the patterns. Nobody’s forcing anyone to play or pay.

I’ve heard of this being a game at baby showers but not something initiated by the parents-to-be.  It seems a little odd to me to be coming from them but I’d think nothing of participating in a “baby pool” as a part of a shower.  Sounds like fun!

@Treasure43:  Then I would have to say that is weird to me, and not something I would ever do.  But I guess if they have people willing to participate, then good for them!

Our office had a baby pool for us.  Honestly, we didn’t earn a lot of money (maybe like $75?) but it was fun to see people’s predicitions and to see everyone excited about it (especially because my water broke at work!).  When a co-worker had his baby a month later, we had another pool for them, and I won!  I think it was new mom’s intution.  🙂

This is very common in my family. Usually it’s a sibling or a cousin that starts the pool. It’s always fun to see everyone’s guesses!

I think it’s weird to do it for money for yourselves. I’ve mainly heard of it associated with office pools, which sounds like it could be fun.

Starting it for your own baby though?! It’s totally different if someone does it for you.
