Baby Redhead’s Birth Story. Nothing scary here.
I was 41 weeks along when she finally arrived. Baby Redhead was sitting so high in my stomach that I had a feeling there was no way she was coming on her own despite my best efforts (walking a lot, rolling on a yoga ball, and acupressure). At my doctor’s appointment with at 39 weeks she discussed scheduling an induction for Friday 1/17/14 at a hospital I didn’t want to deliver at. A brand new hospital had opened about the same distance away but was in a different county so I was told I needed to switch doctors to that county. So after a mild freak-out, I (well my husband actually) scheduled an appointment with a brand new doctor at 40 weeks.
I met with the doctor and she told me I wasn’t making any progress despite having some mild contractions. She wanted me to come back that Monday to check my progress at 41 weeks. The doctor was working in Labor and Delivery that Monday so she was unable to schedule an appointment. She actually told me to fake that I was in labor and tell them I was having contractions and needed to see her. So I went with my mom (my husband needed to save his sick days for when the baby was here) to Labor and Delivery on Monday 1/13/14 and was sent to a triage room to be examined and meet with the doctor. It was crazy because Baby Redhead was sitting so high, the nurse commented that she hadn’t seen anyone as far along as I was with a baby so high. Also I was having no contractions so I figured nothing would change and they’d send me home to be induced Friday like they originally said. Well my fluid was a little low so the doctor said they wouldn’t let me go home and gave me the option of being induced (while explaining that I have an “unfavorable cervix” so there is a greater than 50% chance of a long labor and c-section anyway) or just having a c-section. I opted for the c-section and they scheduled it for just 3 and a half hours later at 4 pm. I called my husband since I had sent him to work (well texted and emailed because he was teaching), and told him to get to the hospital because we were having a baby. It all just happened so fast.
I sent my mom home to let the dogs out and grab some of our things. My husband arrived around 2 pm and stayed with me in the triage room. My surgery got pushed back because the doctor had to deliver a set of twins ahead of me, so I was rescheduled for 6 pm with a different doctor. Slowly people started to arrive to be there when Baby Redhead was born.
At 6 pm they came to prep me for surgery and brought me into the operating room. The anesthesiologist asked what music I wanted played because his phone was hooked up to the room’s speaker system. So I had him turn on The Killers station on Pandora. One of the nurses and the doctor were singing and dancing, it was pretty funny. I got a spinal block and didn’t feel anything for the next few hours. They brought in my husband once I was prepped and they started the surgery. Everything went smoothly and Baby Redhead was born at 7:20 pm, weighing 9 pounds and 14 ounces and 22 inches long. She had a decent amount of fluid in her lungs so they had to suction out a bunch but other than that she was perfectly healthy, Apgar scores were 8 and 9.
Recovery has been really easy. I needed a little more Morphine right after surgery to manage the pain, one dose of Norco the next day, and after that I’ve just been managing with Motrin. I was able to get up and walk the next day and it’s been getting easier each day since. We were released after 3 days and everything has been great at home. Baby Redhead is the cutest thing ever, I can’t get over her super chubby cheeks, and she sleeps like a champ at only 5 days old.
