Hi All-Knowing Hive,
I have friends who are having a baby girl soon (YAY!). We used to be much closer when we were all in college together, but we still get together as often as we can, which turns out to be every few months. I was in their wedding and at the time I was in grad school (not allowed to work in the program I was in) and felt awful that they bought my BM dress for me and I couldn’t give them as generous a gift as I would have liked. Now that I’m out and working I want to get them a great baby shower gift (off their registry of course, that’s what they want, right?!). Would you feel like it was showy for me to get them a $240 pump that they registered for? I feel like that’s something family would usually get or a group of people may go in on together. Should I go with some cheaper stuff in more abundance or one of the other larger ticket items that are cheaper, like $100-$150? Also, my wedding is next year and I don’t want them to feel obligated to give a “large” gift then if they’re just getting used to parenthood etc and all the financial stressors that go along with that life step.
Thanks for reading/voting and your help!!

I would give as big as you can comfortably afford. A breast pump is probably a must-have, so if no one else gets it, they will have to go out of pocket for it.
If you feel a little more comfortable going for something slightly less expensive, that’s fine too.
The only thing I honestly wouldn’t do is the lots of small things. Plenty of people not as close to the couple will get those.

If breast pump is whats on her registry, get it! You can also be creative and make her a diaper cake, they’re easy to make and very showy 🙂 Youtube has ton of videos that show you how to make them. Here’s a nice diaper cake…

honestly as someone who is currently pregnant….I wouldn’t even think twice if someone got me a breastpump and I wouldn’t think its showy….in fact, I would sincerely appreciate it. Regarding your wedding: I’d probably give you a gift equal to what you gave me on my wedding day (considering they already bought the BM dress too). So, you guys are even….Not that being “even” matter between friends!
2nd up: baby monitor:)

Thanks for the advice! I’m going to wait a few weeks if it’s still available I’ll get it, if not I’ll go with one of the other things! Thanks!!

- Wedding: March 2012 - Pelican Grand Beach Resort
The breast pump and the pack n’ play are essentials that will suck for the mom and dad to have to buy themselves, so I’d buy one of those.
