I have a baby shower to attend tomorrow for FI’s cousin who is having her first baby. They are not close, see eachother once or twice a year, and I’ve barely spoken to her/seen her the entire 6 years we have been together. Money is a bit tight right now, and I decided that instead of purchasing something off of her registry, I would make her a “hospital survival kit” full of things she can use when she is in the hospital for a few days. I picked up a bunch of stuff and threw it all together in a basket, which I’ll later wrap with cellophane.
Now, is this too cheap? I feel that maybe there isn’t enough stuff in the basket or maybe not even the right stuff (no kids here!). What do you all think?
For those with kids – would you have liked to receive something like this at your baby shower? What were some useful things that you used while at the hospital?

@sariibear: It’s there now. The basket certainly looks full enough to me.

You can see it now :). I have had two baby showers of my own, and personally I would have really enjoyed a gift like the one you made. It seems like you put a lot of thought into it. I was never focused on how much money any of my friends spent, just thankful they came to celebrate my baby. I don’t think you have anything to worry about, it is a sweet and thoughtful gift, which is more than enough.

I think it is a cute idea! I haven’t had a child so I dont know exactly what she would need. But I think it is the thought that counts!

I’ve had two kids. Both hospital stays were very short. One was a one night stay and the other they let me stay 2 nights since she was born late at night. I probably wouldn’t have used much of it. The hospital provided everything that the baby used and most of what I needed. I used my own shower stuff.
I’d personally go buy an outfit, board book, or blankets instead.

while I think it’s a cute gesture. I’d go to the clearance section at babys r us instead.

I’d like that if someone was to bring it to my shower 🙂

I just had my shower last weekend and I would have loved to get this! It is such a cute and thoughtful idea! If they don’t use it in the hospital, they’ll definitley use it at home the first few weeks. 🙂

i personally love the time and thought put into it even if I didnt use it.

I like it. My sister, who had c-sections and stayed a week each time, would love that. Let’s face it, she can use all that stuff after.

I think this is a beautiful example of a useful, thoughtful gift. You are not obligated to buy anyone anything, so this is a great! I would have loved to receive this!
