It’s been exactly two weeks since baby yellowbird made her grand entrance. Short and sweet birth story at the top and very long detailed one follows. Pictures at the bottom.
After a failed induction starting Wednesday August 29th I was sent home on strict bedrest that friday until labor started naturally. Well, that didn’t last long! I went into labor later that evening and Annalie Violet was born at 3:52AM on September 1st. 7 lbs 7oz of pure love!
Tuesday August 28 I went in for my routine 39 week appointment with my midwives. They took my blood pressure and asked if I had been feeling well lately. I had been feeling completely normal, just a little more swollen than normal. They told me my Bridal Party was 144/90 which is really high for me. They let me lay down and said they’d come check again in 10 mins. Ten minutes later it was 160/90, so they wrote me a not off of work for the next two days and sent me to L&D to be monitored. I was there for about 3 hours with high Bridal Party readings unless I was laying on my left side, so the midwife put me on bed rest, no more work! I was to make a follow up appointment that week at the practice to check in. The only appointment left was for the very next day with an OB so I took it. At my appointment on Wednesday my blood pressure had shot up to 157/105 and the OB looked very concerned. He said he wanted to induce me that night as I would be 39 weeks the next day and we wouldnt gain much by waiting until I hit 40 weeks.
I called my hubs at work and told him to come home, we were gonna have a baby!
We got to the hospital around 5:00 pm
. They monitored me and baby for a whole and then placed a foley baloon to start the induction. The placement didn’t hurt at all, though it was a really strange feeling.
After a couple of hours I started contracting on my own, and they were very painful. I had to take a shower in the middle of the night because I was in so much pain. They tapered off around 4 am
and I finally got a few hours of sleep. When the midwife checked me at 8:00 am
I had only dilated to a two and the balloon wasnt budging. I had to work all morning to get that balloon out, but by twelve she came in and it was done! I was 4 cm dilated and they were going to start pitocin after lunch.
They started the drip around 2 pm
but I really didn’t start feeling any contractions until around 7:30
. No one checked me at all during this time. When the midwife finally came back around 9:45
to check me she informed me I was only 2.5 – 3 cm. What!?!?! I lost progress?? I think we was trying to be nice to me earlier in the day when she said I was at a 4. Obviously the pitocin didn’t work. They turned it off and gave me benedryl to sleep and would start again in the morning. I had a breakdown at this point because I had been in pain for basically 24 hours straight with no progress at all. The pitocin wasn’t working, my blood pressure was very stable while laying down, and I just wanted to go home to be on bed rest again until my body was ready. I made sure the midwife knew this and she agreed with me, but couldnt send me home since it was an OB in the practice who admitted me to be induced.
Finally, morning rolled around and who strolls in Nu room? The OB who admitted me to be indu Ed two days prior. He had spoken to the midwife and while he made it perfectly clear he didn’t want to send me home and wanted to start pitocin again, since my blood pressure was stable when I was in bed, he would send me home if it is what I wanted to do. Thank God!!!! I felt like my body just wasn’t ready yet, and I was headed toward c section because of a failed induction. My husband and I headed home around 9:30 Friday morning
I was feeling contractions but they weren’t very painful and were about 8 minutes apart. I assumed this was leftover from the pitocin I had the night before. A couple hours lasted they were getting very uncomfortable and ranging from5-8 minutes apart. I decided to take a bath and see if they would ease up. The bath felt amazing, but it was so hot in there I could only stand it for about 15 minutes. I got out around 4:00
and sent hubby to go buy a birthing ball because I just could not get comfortable. He was gone for about an hour and the contractions picked up to every 3-4 minutes and unbearably painful. I took a shower and let the water flow over my stomach, but they still hurt sooooo bad! I called the hubs to tell him to hurry! I was in a Lou of pain. He got home around 5:15
and I called the hospital to tell them I was in a lot of pain. They wanted me to come back in and be checked. That’s the last place i wanted to go, but it hurt so much, that we were on our way. We only live about 5 minutes away, by the time we got there and checked in it was 6:00
. They checked me and I was 4cm and in labor!!!! My body was doing it in its own. I decided to take another bath to ease the pain and stayed in for about an hour, but the pain was terrible by this point and I needed to move around. At about 8:00
I asked for something for pain and decided on an epidural. The nurse came back to tell me they might not give me an epidural because my white cell count was high and infection was a concern. I almost died. They gave me some narcotic to take the edge off, and the anesthesiologist came to talk to me and he decided he could give me the epidural but explained all the risks. They put it in around 9:15pm
. They checked me right after and I was at 5cm. Woohoo!
We decided to get some sleep while we could so I could have energy to push when it was time. The midwife woke us up at 1:00
to check me and I was complete! Holy crap! I started shaking uncontrollably because I had so much adrenalin that they let me calm down for about an hour before I started pushing. We listened to iron and wine and Kevin massaged me to calm me down. I started pushing around 2:00
and it was painless but hard to know when to push. Finally at 3:52 am on September 1st Annalie was born! 7lbs 7oz and 21 inches long!
She had a slight fever and swallowed a lot of fluid so after we bonded for an hour they took her away to do a chest X-ray and give her antibiotics. She was on the antibiotics for two days but everything was fine. She came home with us on labor day.
I’m so glad my body decided to cooperate without pitocin and she came into the world on her own.
38 weeks 4 days and 2 weeks post partum!
