I’ve only been to Kauai, but it was great – a combination of both scenic in some areas and touristy in others!

I have only been to Maui but I also heard that kauai is AMAZING! Have fun! i don’t think there is a wrong decisietch with Hawaii. Also my husband and I rented a great condo from homes away website. It was awesome and way more affordable.

@lilbluebird:  For sure!  We rented a condo on Kauai.  It was during the off-season, so it was only $125 a night.

For Scenic, you’ve got:

  • Hanalei Bay (driveable, walkable)
  • Napali Coast (hikeable, boatable)
  • Waimea Canyon (hikeable, driveable)

For Touristy, you’ve got:

  • Kalapaki Beach (the Marriott there has a gorgeous pool) – cruises dock here
  • Poipu (it’s also scenic and has a wonderful hiking trail along the shore)
  • Kapaa

Kauai is hands down my favorite island in Hawaii.  It is less touristy than Maui, and it depends what you are looking for.  Kauai is just breath takingly beauiful in my opinion.  I find Kauai to be more “rugged” than Maui offering plenty of challenging hikes, but there are definitely plenty of ways to take it easy.  Enjoy!

@lilbluebird:  it was really crowded and touristy. i didn’t feel like i was on vacation at all because i couldn’t relax. 🙁 granted, we only stayed in honolulu so maybe the other parts are nice. i looked into going to other areas but it seemed like the beaches weren’t that great or non-existent.

I hate to disagree, but we honeymooned in Oahu and we LOVED it. There’s much more than just Honolulu. And even Honolulu was fun! We want to eventaully go back to Hawaii and we are thinking of Maui next time. I’ve heard great things about Maui. For a babymoon I would probably choose that one. Even though I haven’t been, I’ve heard its a different kind of vibe.

I’m going to chime in with the others – Kauai was amazing! I don’t know about beachfront properties – our condo overlooked the ocean, which was gorgeous.  There were beaches only a few minutes away by car, though.

We went to Kauai and LOVED it! We did a lot of hiking, some of them were very challenging, but I know that there are easy hikes too. Also, we did a helicopter tour, boat tour of the Napoli Coast, beach days, luau, chocolate plantation tour, kayake tour and had some great meals. We loved how utterly relaxing it was, how nice people were and how it didn’t feel like a resort area-just a really beautiful, natural place to visit.
