    I say no. It’s basically the point of the pool that the person who is right gets a prize – there is really no point in it if you two get the money no matter who is correct. And not everyone carries cash on them, regardless of whether or not they brought a gift (although it is a bit odd if they don’t since it’s kinda the point of a shower), I still don’t think it’s right to put people on the spot like that.

    I just don’t ever think it’s appropriate to ask your guest at an event you’re hosting to be asked to pay for anything. Plus, shouldn’t the pool go to the winner?

    The pool totally goes to the winner not the parents. I have never hear of here’s here the parents get the money.  you could tell the people at the shower that there is a pool going on. But I wouldn’t request for them to buy in.

    I’ve seen this at every baby shower I’ve ever gone to.  It’s usually a 50/50 kind of thing.  Where you buy a guess for a toonie (Canadian $2.00 coin).  It’s totally optional, and usually if the parents don’t know the gender you guess the gender/date, or sometimes if the gender is known they’ll have people guess the date/time or date/weight, and whoever’s closest gets half the pot, and the other half goes to the “college fund” or something similar.

    @runsyellowlites:  We actually already started this in my family. Every paid a dollar and got to enter a guess with my sister.  They entered for the chance to win the first baby pic sent. Who ever wins the pool will get the first baby picture texted them. My Aunts and cousins thought this was amazing. A couple of them took a couple different guesses at the chance of winning the first pic.

    I’ve seen it done but usually everyone picks a date and then somebody agrees to give the winner a prize (gift certificate, etc.) I love the idea and think it helps to get everyone involved!

    @runsyellowlites:  It’s a good way to take the money and not feel guilty about it 🙂 Plus my family is the type who loves to know anything first lol

    I wouldn’t do this at your shower but if you want to do something fun, you could do something like what we’re doing. My brother decided to sponsor a pool where friends and family are guessing the baby’s arrival date, weight, sex, and name. Whoever wins gets $50 (sponsored by my brother). They are not really required to donate but he is suggesting a $5 contribution to the baby which he will then use to buy a bond for the baby. It was totally his idea, he is the godfather and is excited, and we thought it was really sweet. If you are looking for something fun, that might be good 🙂

    @mwitter80:  I love that too!
