Depends on what you are looking for, party life, scenery ect. I would say Miami, I have friends that go every year and LOVE it and I LOVE the ocean, even though i havent been there yet lol. There are usually some good deals for hotels on the strip through groupon.

marycarlyle:  I think it depends what you want to do! If you want beaches ect I would do Miami, but keep in mind its pretty hot and muggy in FL in the summer ( depending on when you go). Chicago though has soo much going on so many festivals in the summer, we have the lake, cubs/sox ect

I think both Miami and chicago are comparable in prices ect. Chicago could be cheaper if you stay in suburbs.

Where are you from originally?

marycarlyle:  I also think this depends a lot on you and your friends.

Oak Street Beach is lovely, but smaller in scale and more family oriented than the beaches in Miami.  Chicago has great restaurants and great shopping.

In Miami, the scene varies depending on where you are.  South Beach is very Jersey Shore, very young, very loud, very wild.  Lots of nightlife and lots of Cuban and other Latin food.  You can also do a Miami trip that is more resort-like, think older people poolside with cocktails.

Can you say more about your vision?  What would you like to do?  Brunches and shopping with light beaching?  Poolside lounging?  Or hard partying?

Even if you’re used to summer in DC, I still think Miami would be too hot, in the summer. Chicago seems kind of an offbeat choice, to me. Are they your only two choices?

marycarlyle:  Ive actually never been to Oak Street, just North ave beach which has a pretty decent party vibe…theres the Castaways bar right there. You can also do paddleboarding and what not.

Also lake michigan is pretty cold even in the summer ( especially if we have another really bad winter), so keep that in mind. And you can’t drink ON the beach unless you are really really discreet about it ( like put vodka/ect in water bottles- you can’t just walk around with a beer or anything. I’ve drank there no issue but was I discreet.

As far as city life there is so so much going will not be dissapointed Michigan Ave, the bean, millenium park, wrigleyville is super popular ( and fun) for bachelorette parties, theres also a few really fun drag bars and piano bars (Howl at the moon near the loop), really really nice rooftop bars, the shedd…the architectural tour is really good, the skyline can’t be beat in chicago. Its a gorgeous city and summer is the best time to visit
