My Maid/Matron of Honor and I were discussing this just a few days ago – I think we are going to do a 1920s speakeasy theme. I think the clothes, jewelry and makeup from that era are pretty popular for everyday wear right now, so we can get dressed up without looking costume-y. Not sure where you are located, but here in SF there are a few clubs and bars with sort of a prohibition feel to them. I was thereafter prohibited from coming up with new ideas so as to not plan my own bachelorette party, but I think it will be a good balance of fun, theme and non-trashiness.

1920’s theme! Love it! TTry hitting Miceli’s in Los Angeles if that’s the area you’re in. You could also throw some swing dancing in the mix. There are some venues around LA/OC for a lesson and some dancing. The movie 500 Days of summer had a couple of cool bars in it that would be pretty swanky if you’re looking for a martini.
Another possible option would be a wine tasting. You could hit a local wine bar for that or head to the nearest winery. Even better if you could combine it with a chocolate tasting. I know a classy Champagne bar if that interests you.
Chocolate tasting might be fun as well depending on where you do it.
As for other themes, I’ve seen a lot of New Moon parties popping up but that doesn’t strike me as fitting your criteria of elegant. =) How about choosing a color combo and everyone has to wear outfits with those colors. More possible themes: Masquerade, Cupcake Cuties (think bold colors, sugary sweet), Mad Men – drink martinis and dress the part.
I saw a hilarious bachelor party the other day. Their theme was Grumpy Old Men. You have to check it out: http://jesihaackweddings.blogspot.com/2009/11/grumpy-old-men-day.html
If you need some vendor suggestions, send me a message.

We’re doing a cocktail theme — firstly, going to a studio where they do 3-hour hat-making classes for hen (bachelorette) parties, including champagne and finger food, so we’ll make cocktail hats. Then go out for cocktails, then back to a fancy hotel to watch movies, have in-room manicures, and… drink more cocktails, I guess!

Wine tour? A lot of people are doing those nowadays.

I’m pretty sure I want something delightfully trashy- just because I’ve never been able to be trashy before. weiner earrings, anyone?

I think the cocktail theme is pretty cool. Or what about a “Mad Men” theme? You guys could all dress up like bored 1960s housewives (kind of a play on the whole getting married thing in a society that doesn’t expect women to be seen and not heard). Go to a fancy dinner, go out for cocktails later and maybe come home for an old movie marathon slumber party?
That’s my idea of fun, haha. [attachment=516948,68087]
