Hey there, I just got back after spending a couple weeks in Mexico for my Destination Wedding and honeymoon. I haven’t been on the bee much the past few months, but the hive was so helpful and supportive in my early stages of planning that I had to come back and share! 🙂
We got married on October 15th, 2011 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and it was above and beyond anything we could have hoped for. There were so many times in the past year that we wondered if we were crazy for planning a Destination Wedding and questioned if all the stress and anxiety that it caused was worth it, and now that it’s over, I can confidently say that it was completely 100% worth every second and dime we spent. There are some things that you have to sacrifice with a Destination Wedding, but in my experience the advantages far outweighed the disadvantages. We had almost 90 come, and having so many people travel so far to celebrate with us was the most amazing overwhelming feeling I’ve ever experienced. I would do it over again in a heartbeat.
Anyway, I’m still waiting on pro pics but below are some guest photos:
It is tradition in San Miguel that after the wedding, you “parade” through the streets so that the locals can come out and congratulate you and wish you a long and happy future. I’m not sure when the tequila donkey and mojigangas (large puppets) became part of this tradition, but they were a total hit! Our guests went nuts for them.
Beautiful streets of San Miguel
Like I said, totally worth it 🙂
Hope you are all doing well and your Destination Wedding planning is coming along!

Wow! I’m literally teary eyed! Beautiful! Those pictures are what I’m praying for my own Destination Wedding. An authentic, special experience that will be remembered long after it’s over. You looked beautiful and your guests looked like they were having great fun. Congrats and thanks for easing my fears a bit.

@VegasSukie: that was exactly what i was aiming for…. an authentic, special experience that people would remember for a long time, and I think I achieved it. I really wanted it to be a true reflection of us, but also of the local culture. So many people came up and told me that it was so unique and different and personal that they had no idea how they would be able to adequately describe it to people. I think with destination weddings, that aspect is hard not to achieve. I’m sure your wedding will be the same 🙂

@SFtoSayulita: Oh my god, you have no idea how much I laughed when Shannon told me this story… I basically yelled “THAT’S SFtoSAYULITA!” and everyone thought I was crazy. I’m going to PM you 🙂
@MASPA: No, we actually got married at the instituto Allende. We had actually put a depsoit down on Hacienda las Trancas, but after visiting and realizing that it was almost an hour away from San Migue (much much longer than the 25 minutes we were quoted), we realized it wasn’t going to work for us. We did not feel comfortable being that far away from our guests, which resulted in some unpleasant correspondance with the owner. It’s a beautiful place though. Are you getting married in San Miguel?

@SerenaSF: no we aren’t getting married there. Fiance was firm on it. He said mexico worked for the resort beach wedding which I didnt want. Figures.
Instead, were going to vegas.

Gorgeous!!! Looooove your pics! You look stunning and I must say I loooove your dress as our our similar in styles. I love the parade through the streets – so awesome!
I just returned from my Destination Wedding in Cabo and 100% agree with you – soooo completely worth it. We spent 4 days with friends and family in a gorgeous villa and I loved every minute of it. I only wish I could do it all over again. I’ll need to write up a post with vendor recommendations, pics…etc.
Best wishes to you!

awww! So nice to hear! I’m getting married next year in San Luis Potosi….just a hop and a skip away from where you got married. Sometimes I doubt if we’re doing the right thing but there’s not going back…church and venue and everything is paid for. So nice to hear someone felt like their Destination Wedding was worth it!
I worry people will feel akward or inconvinienced…even though I’ve put no pressure on anyone and I really don’t expect that many to come. We invited about 80 people from the states but we know maybe 12-20 will come because we don’t come from a circle of family and friends who have extra money laying around…which is fine because most of my family lives in San Luis Potosi anyway…so there will be a party no matter what.
Your pics are gorgeous!!! Congrats!!

YOUR pics are amazing !!
That was my fear of making it hard for my guest to make my wedding but our destination wedding was great ! We had about 40 people come and the ones who did were just like my husband and I: Open minded, Adventurous and Travel lovers! We had a couple of activities for the guest- a welcome dinner, a rehearsal dinner, a segway tour, and finally the wedding! I really wanted to treat the guest who made the trek right and since the numbers were low we could do it !!
I was a little uptight about the flights getting in but once everyone was on the ground it all came together and EVERYONE had a BLAST !! They said it was the best/funnest wedding they had ever been too.
Most of family was going to have to travel anyway.
Good Luck to you !
