Hi lovely bees,
I just got back from Aruba and guess what, drum rollllll…I AM ENGAGED!
I have secretly found out that he ordered a ring in January, and I posted here:
We had passed a few landmarks like trip to Ottawa, Valentines Day etc. and I kind of expect him to propose during out trip to Aruba Feb22 – March 3. The day before our flight we got crazy drunk and forgot to pack many many things that we planned to take with us during the vacation, so on the plane I was saying to myself “Damn I probably shot myself in the foot by getting him so drunk last night! I don’t think he’d pack the ring with him”, and he was showing no signs of nervousness when I unpacked, so I thought he really forgot to bring the ring, or he didn’t plan to propose in Aruba.
Feb 24th was his Bday. I treated him to a super romantic dinner on the beach at one of the best restaurant on the island. On our way there I hugged him and sneakily checked all his pockets… no ring box, so not surprised that he didn’t propose over that romantic dinner…
When we went back to the resort (Coral Reef Beach Resort), another couple arrived, and they are expecting a baby. I got very emotional so I was sitting by the sea getting teary… He came and hugged me from behinds, and said “Don’t worry baby, all will be fine…” and sat with me till I got over it.
So we passed the following few days sight seeing, going to nice big beaches and saw basically everything on Aruba with our rental car. I was so happy with the trip so the engagement is not on my mind at all. I have to say this had to do largely with the place we stayed. The resort is very small but intimate. The owners (British couple Peter and Julie) created such a charming little place in a little fishing town in Aruba far away from the noise and business of the tourist area, and the guests from all walk of life became instant friends, sharing every evening socializing together… It was amazing! Highly recommended to anyone who would like to visit Aruba! This is how you should experience this safe island instead of staying in the all-inclusive hotels.
On Thursday Feb 28th, MY SO suggested to go to a nearby local beach. We had seen it when the resort owner took us for a ride during the orientation. The beach was small with perfect white powder sand and calm water. We were the only two there (locals use this beach during weekends and during weekdays the beach was pretty empty). We went in the water to play a little while. He kissed me more often than he usually does (we kiss a lot). When we got back on the beach, we sat down side by side, and he grabbed my right hand and put it between his two palms, touching it as if his life was in it! I had a sudden realization – this is it!!
He broke the silence and said “Baby I really enjoy being with you, and I love you very much…” I was shaking inside so I moved closer to him and said “I feel the same way”. I couldn’t even look at him at that time. My heart was racing. He went on “I brought you here for a reason. I want to ask you, if you’d like to marry me.” I looked at him as he was asking, and my head was blank… he said “honey, I am asking you a serious question!” I sort of went back to normal with this reminder, and I happily said “yes”. We kissed and hugged. A moment later, the shock passed and the emotion rolled in, I started to cry like a baby and he was just holding me and kissing me… Then he realized that he did not get on one knee, and he didn’t even bring out the ring – The ring was in the beach bag. He opened his bag, and showed me how he had hidden the ring box in his camcorder bag… He took it out, and put it on my finger, a perfect fit!!!
We stayed there a little longer and went back to the resort. We told everyone there and all of them were so happy for us! At sunset the owner sent out a bottle of champagne for us to enjoy… I was over the moon happy!!!
That night I skyped with my mom to tell her the good news. Turned out he had talked to my dad before our departure so they knew he would propose in Aruba. He sent an email to his parents and his sister in Switzerland. The next morning, we received excited responses from them, so although he didn’t ask his family’s blessing in advance, it was all good in the end!
Now I am back with a ring on my finger. He packed the ring 2 nights before our departure to make sure he wouldn’t be too drunk and left it behind. I am now so happy and content with my life! This is what I have been waiting for, and although I was expecting it to happend, he did catch me by surprise, and although it was not fancy, it was so intimate, so him!!! I will never forget this feeling or take him for granted!
Anyway, this is my story, and again sorry for it being so long!!!
To all the bees who have given me comfort and courage, I love you guys! Thank you!
To all the bees who are still waiting, please have faith! Your man will make your dream come true!
Here’s our picture taken by my iphone moments after he popped the question, and a closer look at the ring (Thank God I did my nails…).
