I’m currently 23w5d with my first! I’ve been having back pain the past few weeks and I’m assuming it will just get worse as I gain more weight. I work as a recreation therapist in long term care and my job is very physically demanding. I’m already on modified duty (so no pushing, pulling wheelchairs or lifting heaving things) but even with that there’s still a lot of walking, sitting, standing, feeding, bending down, leading fitness programs etc etc. and by the end of the day my back kills. Anyhoo, my question is should I ask to be even more modified or even ask to do another job within the facility? Or am I just being too sensitive and just suck it up and work through it?

faith9 : I DEFINITELY would be asking for something less strenous on your body. You’re only going to get more uncomfortable and everything is going to hurt more and more. Plus, your center of gravity gets thrown off, so you could easily fall or slip and no pregnant lady wants to do that.
I’m only 32 weeks, but holy crap, I’ve gotten soooo uncomfortable this last week or two. I can only imagine how much more worse it’s going to get, so I’d ask for something else to keep you from hurting yourself or getting put on bedrest or something from too much stress on your body.
Congratulations and good luck!!

I would say something. I had a desk job and started having contractions because my body couldn’t handle sitting up straight in a desk chair for 8 hours a day. Each woman and each pregnancy is different so don’t feel bad telling them you need a modification. I didn’t ask to work from home and I made myself go to work and here I am on week 2 of bed rest because my blood pressure and swelling got so bad. Take care of yourself!

Ask for continued modified work! No need for you to suffer!! I’m just a little further along than you and I can attest that things don’t get any easier. Also, make sure you have good shoes with lots of support for when you are standing, and try to get in some good stretches in the morning and before bed. Even if you get stuck with mostly desk work, you want to make sure you are stretching and moving your body in ways that work for you. Mama and baby come first! 🙂
