Do you have an event planning comany close to you? Or one that does event decorating? You may be able to get some inspiration from their online gallery. Most that I’ve seen use some kind of draping for around the walls, and combined with lighting, you can create a different feel for the whole room.

@out4answers:  Renting an arch from a party company is usually very economical. So is tulle and fake flowers… renting an arch in my area (expensive Orange County, CA) ranges from $30-$150 and they come and set it up for you.

Doing your research helps a lot! Shop around 😉

Here is a DIY tutorial for draping:

DIY Wedding Hall Decorations

there are many other ideas:

balloons

doilies

fabric with bunting down the side                   fringe  used to decorate floats in parades

old doors

paper chains

paper flowers

ribbons or lengths of scrap fabric

You can buy special clips to go over the bars (they are called T bars) on those suspended ceilings. That will allow you to hang anything you want, either directly from the bar or by stringing fishing line across the bars.

You can buy very inexpensive sheer curtains at someplace like Burlington Coat Factory and use those instead of professional draping.
