- Wedding: February 2013
We are getting married in Central Florida on February 5, 2013. We already have the ceremony location chosen and paid for, and we were planning to have a reception at a reception hall not far from the ceremony site. The reception hall and food was going to end up costing us around $2000, with our overall wedding budget (including contributions from my mom) ending up at around $5000 to $7000.
However life is getting in the way of our wedding planning in a good way–we will be buying a house as soon as we are able, because the one we’re renting now is being foreclosed on, and it’s cheaper by about $500 to pay for a mortgage than it would be to rent a similar home. So we want to buy a nice home fairly soon. The problem with this is, we can’t save up a whole lot of money for the wedding if we’re going to be sinking it into a down payment, paying for paint/carpet/appliances/furniture/etc.
So we are seriously considering either not having a reception or having a much smaller one The thought came to me today that maybe we could have a backyard reception in our new home, since we will have no more than 50 people attending the wedding anyways. Do you think this is do-able? Will it be tacky to have a nice wedding then an at-home reception? I thought of asking everyone to bring something, either a food item or something like plates, silverware, chairs, tables, etc… I think we could pull it off pretty well but since I only plan on getting married once I worry I will regret the decision later!
