Is this your first time dress shopping? If so just go to the appointment not expecting to THE dress just as an opportunity to find out what type of dresses look good on your body type. Next to what you think you like try on dresses you already know you don’t want, just so that you can be sure.

Wear your hair up so it doesn’t distract you and just focus on the dress and how it looks on you.

You will be trying on a lot of dresses that are to big and/or to small so that your a little bit bloated will not matter, you will look passed it.

Just see it as a fun day out trying on pretty dresses, don’t put pressure on yourself to look perfect.

Just try and go with a positive attitude. Your hair will be different by your wedding, you will not be bloated. Just try some dresses on with an open mind and try not to worry if you don’t find the one on the first day.

I felt the same way at my dress shopping experience. It only made me see how much weight I have gained. On the positive side it was much easier to choose a dress because I needed to pick one that flattered my shape. It eliminated a ton of styles because they wouldn’t flatter me. But yes I found it didn’t meet my expectations of dress shopping.

In general I have found in the wedding process that many things don’t live up to the expectation that we see on tv and social media. I have found it helpful to not expect it to be like that and it has helped. As for the dress, the one I got was more of a classic plain silk style A line which does flatter my shape. Since the style is classic it is a bit immune to criticism which makes me feel less anxious. I’m also trying to be confident that on the day of with makeup and hair and veil it will come together and I will feel pretty. Hope your appointment goes well bee! Hugs

i addd a photo of mine if that helps👍

I’m in the exact same boat. I’ve been putting off dress shopping because I’m not really at my ideal weight, but I can’t really wait any longer (my wedding is just over 8 months out). I have 2 dress appointments next week and I’m feeling really anxious and nervous about them. I think sometimes weddings, particularly “the dress” can bring out a lot of insecurities we have about ourselves. But I think it’s best to go into it with low stress and low pressure – as a bee above said, just think about looking at which type of dress you like, with no pressure to find the perfect one right away! I’m trying to view my appointments as just “exploratory”.

The other thing is – although there’s lots of hype, the dress doesn’t really matter in the end. What matters is this wonderful thing you’re doing with your partner, and your friends and family being there to witness it. You want to feel good, but whatever dress you end up with, you’ll be beautiful, because you’ll be glowing with happiness 🙂 (i’m telling myself this too)

whaleumarryme :  Thank you!! Don’t stress too much. You can always have a second appointment another time. If it helps, I also didn’t have a big emotional reaction or cry with my dress so do not feel like if that doesn’t happen to you that it means something bad. I like my dress but im not like in amazement over it. My experience was not AT ALL like the tv show wedding dress shopping moments brides have. Not everyone has a reaction, not everyone feels amazing. In reality your just trying to find a dress like you would for any occasion. Don’t be too hard on yourself and give yourself some wiggle room. Keep in mind that when you are all done up for your big day you will look way better than standing under bright lights without professional hair and makeup.

One last tip – With fashion choices its never good to go way out of your comfort zone because you will feel super awkward and ” on display” if you do. I would love to wear heels but they hurt my feet and i would be distracted worrying about how i look walking if i got them. Whenever i go out in public trying a new kinda out there style i always feel like everyone is staring at me and im concerned if people think i got the look right. Avoid that. Pick a dress that feels comfortable for you visually and physically. I think that will do a great deal to lower your stress.

Honestly, this was me. I admit I hated dress shopping because of it, and white isn’t exactly the most flattering color to begin with! Plus, I loved the look of form-fitting dresses, but with my bloated belly, it was NOT working out.

However, I will say, I did finally put on a dress (3rd dress shop) that completely changed the game. It fit me in all the right places, was super comfortable, and had that sparkle I was going for. I didn’t see an overstuffed bride in it, I saw a happy one! It wasn’t the shape I initially had in mind, but I ended up falling for it right away! So with that said, I would say just keep an open mind, try everything, and don’t let 1, 2, 3 or 10 bad shops discourage you! There’s a dress out there for everyone and I am confident you will find something you love!

Best of luck bee, and try to remember not to be so hard on yourself! You have a lot going on right now AND you still have plenty of time to get healthier (if you want!!!) before your big day. Deep breaths and try to remember to enjoy the moment. I wish I had done that more!

If you want to feel a little less bloated by tomorrow, cut down on your salt today, have a salad (with grilled chicken or other lean meat) for lunch and dinner and drink at least half your weight in lbs in ounces of water. Cut soda/alcohol just for today. You’ll definitely notice a difference in the morning and hopefully that will help you feel better about your shopping experience. 🙂
