I know I have chimed in a couple of times already, but I was thinking of a few things you should try out if you do your own makeup for your wedding day.  I am not a professional MUA, but I am an artist and have spent a great deal of time trying out a variety of high-end products, so I feel like I know what works well…

First, get a good primer.  My suggestion would be Smashbox Primer or Laura Mercier Primer.

Second, get a good foundation.  I love Make Up Forever Photo Finish liquid foundation and use the white HD powder- which locks in your makeup and gives you the smoothest skin ever!!!  Some people say that with flash photography, your makeup can turn out white with this stuff, but I have never had any problems.  It has a super natural finish, blends really well, and it give you a “dewy” look which is alwyays nice for your wedding day. It has a natural coverage, but it is also buildable if you need a little extra coverage.  The fact that your MUA used Maybeline is a huge red flag.  I’m not trying to get all snobby about makeup brands, but in this case, I do believe that you do get what you pay for.  Honestly!

Third- get some good blush and bronzer.  I love using Benetint from Benefit.  It’s a liquid which has to be dabbed on, but it gives an amazingly natural flush color, perfect for a blushing bride!!  πŸ™‚

Smashbox also has a great contouring kit-Smashbox Contour Kit

I also think a good highlighter like Highbeam by Benefit is amazing! I like puting it on my brow-bone, cheekbones, bridge of nose, and chin.  It captures light really well and gives you a glistening look.

Lipstick- my favorite color is by Laura Mercier in “Peony” which can be viewed here: Laura Mercier Peony, but the bad thing is that it doesn’t last all day.  The color is just universally gorgoeous! If you don’t mind reapplying it, then go for it! Your lips will shimmer and won’t be sticky or anything.  I might reconsider wearing that color if it were me, because I know I will be kissing my hubby and other people- so a kiss proof formua by some other company might be better.

And then, eyebrows…Sephora has a great eybrow pencil which is super fine and will last all day!

Sephora Brow pencil

And Last- get yourself some good mascara and eyeliner- My favorite mascara is Lancome Difinicils.  Waterproof, of course! Difinicils Waterproof

In the end, you may spend a couple hundred dollars in high-end makeup products, but it will save you on the cost of a MUA and you have great makeup to use after your wedding!

I hope this helps.  I wish you the best on your wedding day, ya pretty lady! πŸ™‚

mrssjwilliams:  Yikes! I can’t believe she left your liner like that! I suck at eye makeup and even I do a better job with gel liner. Goodness. You do a far better job than she does!

mrssjwilliams:  how does this lady think she a pro when she uses brands like Elf and Maybeline. Oh man.

When it comes to foundation and eye makeup- you have to go high end! not just for the finished product but also for longevitY.

And LA Colors- nooooooo! thay stuff was made for middle school girls.

There’s so many responses anyway and I haven’t read them all, but for all the money you would spend on her you might aswell buy yourself some nice makeup and DIY it. Just practice a few times!

It could be the lightning and picture quality making it look worse than it is, but that eyeliner looks like you woke up in 2007.

And I do agree that there are some good drug store dupes. I love me some Loreal mascara…Voluminous Mascara is my favorite thing that I’ll regularly purchase if I don’t feel like spending thirty bucks on Lancome.  I actually heard that they are the same company, hence the good quality in both lines.

And the E.L.F. eyeliner is so crappy!  i made the mistake of purchasing their gel liner once and it doesn’t even stay on for long and is so smudgy.  That’s one of my biggest pet peaves- I use black liner regularly but am forever searching for a good waterproof black liner- preferably in pencil.

Did this MUA you used have a portfolio or something?  Or a website?  I would love to see what she claims to be able to do.  I’m so sorry you have to deal with this when you are so close to your wedding…it sucks when you put your faith in someone who says they are a “pro” but they have the skill-set of a four year old.  Blah!  I’m sure you will look beyond gorgeous if you do your own makeup on your special day!  I did my best friend’s makeup and she ended up looking gorgeous- but I also used my own good quality makeup  for her.  Not ELF or LA COLORS.  Sheesh…

mrssjwilliams:  I really like your makeup application so much better. I did my own makeup on my wedding day as well. I see nothing wrong with doing it on your own. πŸ™‚ From your pic, the suggestions I would make:

1. Fill your brows a little differently to make them more defined.

2. Do some contouring (jaw line, cheek bones, nose).

Other than that, I think you did a great job!
