I haven’t been yet, but FH and I are going to Jamaica for our honeymoon – staying at a Sandals property. My two coworkers and my friend have all gone there and loved it. I think it’s like a lot of places – it all depends on where you stay. There’s poverty and crime everywhere, you just need to be not dumb and you should be okay.

Plus, our travel agent told us the Bahamas is more expensive – both to get there, stay there, and buy things there. And the flights took us a lot longer to get to our honeymoon. For Jamaica, we just have one short layover there and back.

I’ve have never been to Jamaica but loved the Bahamas – the Atlantis is awesome!  Also the One and Only Ocean Club…

I’ve never heard anything bad about Jamaica….

I have been to jamaica a few times and it is beautiful. you don’t want to wander the countryside alone, but there really is no reason to leave the resort and they are incredibly safe. i highly recommend the Royal Plantation resort. it is small and quiet, which is perfect for a honeymoon… and all-inclusive!

Sinitsa – I have been both places and really prefer Jamaica but it probably depends on where you stay.  If you want a beach, stay in Negril – it is gorgeous!  We went while we were still dating last June to Couples Swept Away, http://www.couples.com .  I can’t say enough amazing things about it!  It is a small resort compared to others but is all-inclusive.  The food was amazing, as was the staff, and they absolutely refuse to accept tips (it’s included in the cost).  We found a great rate and were very well taken care of from the moment we arrived at the airport…they have a private lounge area where they immediately take your luggage and hand you a red stripe 🙂  If you want more info on the place please let me know, the only reason we aren’t going for our honeymoon is because we want to go somewhere we haven’t been but trust me we will go back there ASAP!!

I kind of think that most tropical resort vacations are all the same, but I think I’d prefer Jamaica (I’ve been to the Bahamas twice and it was no big deal). As far as safety, if you stay on the resort, there shouldn’t be any problem.

I’ve never been to Jamaica, but I have been to the Bahamas….once was enough.

I’d go for Jamaica.

Both Jamaica and the Bahamas are both quite lovely.  I would not suggest that you wander around Jamaica by yourself.  Some of the people in my all-inclusive went on a tour that dropped them off for shopping.  They thought it would be like shopping in Bermuda with a lot of high-end stores.  Jamaica is not a good place for high-end shopping, plus locals kept asking for money/trying to sell them stuff on the street so you should absolutely skip that.  The waterfalls in Jamaica are quite lovely, and Barrett Adventures can plan any type of private tour you would like.  It will be quite safe and enjoyable with their guides.

The Bahamas is quite lovely also, and a bit safer to wander around.  I really like the Atlantis (a huge water park).  They opened a new adult all resort.  Please bear in mind though that their food is quite expensive, so you may wind up paying more than if you stay in an all-inclusive.

Depends what kind of people you are.

Lots of harrassment on the streets in Jamaica…and on the beaches….and everywhere.  Also, the crime capitol of the world (literally)

That being said, I loved it.

A must do would be Dunns River Falls climb.

Jamaica is for the tough traveller….

I would rather do Bahamas for my honeymoon for sure
