My fiance and I are planning our wedding in the Bahamas (Long Island) for October 2018. We really like the time we have picked and the Island holds a very special place in my heart.
The issue is that Ocotober is still during hurricane season and that makes me extremely nervous.
Has anyone planned a wedding in the Caribbean in the fall? Is someone an expert in this area of wedding planning?
I would appreciate any comments and suggestions!

We were thinking of going on our honeymoon to the Bahamas after our wedding in October, and decided not to for the exact reason that it’s hurricane season and don’t want to risk getting rained out for our entire honeymoon.
Why do you like the time you have picked? For us it was very important to get married in October, mainly because we love autumn in Canada. At the end of the day, we placed more importance on the month than the vneue, so we set our date and picked our venue based on availability in October.
I think you need to decide – what’s more important, getting married in Bahamas, or getting married in October? If the former, then I would pick a month outside of hurricane season. If its the latter, then I would pick an island not in the hurricane belt (Aruba, Curacao, or Bonaire).

- Wedding: April 2016 - Manhattan, NY
It’s really a toss-up. My husband and I went to Jamaica in mid-October (2015) and we only had a couple showers during our stay. The weather was otherwise beautiful and it was an amazing trip, as he proposed there. Weather is so unpredictable no matter where you are. I would plan to have a covered ceremony and reception (or a rain location) but probably still go through with the destination wedding if it’s what I had my heart set on.

Not sure what you’re looking for- someone to say ‘oh there won’t be a hurricane the weekend of your wedding if you book here’? Lol
Just realize that most people won’t come, and if there’s an impending storm some may cancel last minute. I for sure wouldn’t use up my vacation days on someone’s wedding during hurricane season!

We travel during the shoulder hurricane season because its cheaper, and its been a toss up.
One year we got super lucky because it stormed the week before we got there and the week after. I think we had 1 evening of rain during the week we were down there and sunny skies besides that.
One year we had intermitant showers, nothing terrible. enough to cool off during the day.
One year we had torrential downpour with only 1 sunny day during the week. Our rooms (plural) flooded, and it was kind of awful lol.
I will risk it for my own vacation, but I probably wouldn’t risk it for a wedding.

I would definitely NOT plan a wedding for hurricane season in the Caribbean. I know enough people who have had to cancel/ reschedule vacations over the years….can’t imagine the added stress of planning a wedding!!
If your heart is set on the Bahamas, do it in the winter or spring.
If you just want a beach Destination Wedding in October, consider Bermuda or Aruba / Bonaire/ Curaçao where you’ll be far enough north of south to avoid 99% of hurricanes.

I would advise against it. Even if October is toward the end of hurricane season, you still have to worry about the hurricanes that hit in August/Sept leaving repairs still being worked on.

I would say pick a different time if your heart is set on the Bahamas (or other hurricane prone areas). As EurasianBee said, it’s not just the risk of rain/actual storm during your wedding but also the active repairs from prior storms. There are a lot of risks here – and not just a rainy wedding day but actual dangerous weather for you & your guests.
