THOUGHT I wanted ball gown or A-line, ended up with a mermaid, the LAST thing I thought I wanted, lol.

I prefer the ball gown. I personally think the form fitting and mermaid dresses are the new version of the dresses with pick-ups.

Started thinking I wanted ballgown, ended deciding I wanted drop waist (so mermaid or trumpet). I’m short-ish with really small shoulders, so as much as I looooove ballgowns, the mermaids looked more flattering on me.

I’ll attach pics from the last bridal show I went to. I had never tried on a fitted dress before, so I was shocked at how flattering they are.

pic 1 (sorry for the enormous size and bad quality of pic..was sneaking camera phone in):

aaaaaand pic 2: Mermaid. Definitely more flattering-

My rear does NOT need any additional “accenting” so I wanted an A-line, and ended up with an A-line.  I tried on a true mermaid and couldn’t walk around, I tried a trumpet gown and could not sit for fear of splitting it, and I tried a fit-n-flare A-line and didn’t find it particularly flattering.  I agree with@2PeasinaPod:  that the mermaid gowns are the next wedding dress fad/popular style.

I either wanted an a-line or a ballgown, and I ended up with a flowy a-line.

i think mermaids are very beautiful but i prefer ballgown as I think the mermaid look will be outdated soon. I think an A-line/ballgown dress is very timeless..

I know that doesn’t matter to most people but that was very important to me

@the_future_mrs – I agree! I tried on some a-line styles & ballgowns and they seemed to add extra bulk to my body & shortened my waist.

I always dreamed of a ball gown.  But I’m 4’11”.  The big, full skirts made me feel even shorter.  I put on the mermaid, and felt really beautiful, so that’s what I bought.

I wanted A-line, and ended up with a ballgown.  I’ve spent my whole life dealing with having big hips, and I did not want to spend my wedding feeling uncomfortable about them – so I knew I wanted something that would hide them!

I loved the mermaid/fit n flare type of dress on me, but I didn’t feel *bridal* in it, if that makes sense.  It just didn’t fit my mental image of how I wanted to look on my wedding day.  Kind of like if you spend your whole life thinking you’ll only wear white, and then you try on a great pink dress.  It’s great, but it’s still pink.

My dress is a very full a-line. I wish I could pull of a true ballgown, but on me it just made me look bigger.

Ball gowns are more flattering on my figure, but some ladies are really just swallowed up in them. Mermaids seem to work more for the petite, shorter girls. Just my opinion!

I picked a ball gown! I never really liked mermaid style dresses, and I felt like a princess in my ball gown! 🙂
