I personally like DJ’s more, just because it’s easier to keep the night “going’ then is with a band. The DJ can play to the crowd a bit more, and figure out what’s making people dance or clear the floor, just because they have access to more songs. But, a bad DJ can ruin a night, that’s for sure.

I’d go with a DJ over a band, mostly because I’d want songs from all generations and genres played, and you’re more likely to find a DJ who can do that then a band.

I’m Pro-Band but it really depends on the quality of the band or DJ. Like PP said, a bad band or DJ can really change the mood.

Also, keep in mind you will have to provide meals to the vendor. Paying for a 10 piece band’s meal as opposed to a one person DJ can add up

I say DJ! I’ve never really liked bands because you get one ‘style’ of music but with a DJ, as said before, they can read the atmosphere of the crowds and play the songs accordingly. Plus, if a guest ever has a request, the guarantee would be in the DJ’s music library as compared to a band’s knowledge of how to play that song.

We were torn as well due to budget issues! So we did DJ for reception (they can play music for everyone) and then we went with a string duo for our ceremony (cello/violin) we get a little bit of both and the duo is playing everything from classical to The Beatles! All together it was much cheaper then just a band.

we’re having a guitar duet.  They asked for $200 for the four hours, we’ll probably give $400
