If I were paying for a band then I would want the band to play especially the special songs!! I think you need to review your contract and then talk to whoever is the contact person for the band.

@mkline2003:  Did they give you a reason why?

Is it because they want to make sure those songs (i.e. first dance, father/daughter, mother/son, etc) are exactly as you are used to hearing them? Or are they songs that are not normally in their repertoire?

If they are just going to playback songs from a CD/laptop/ipod than I would just have a DJ instead

@mkline2003:  So they are a jazz band?

Are they going to mainly be playing jazz music? Maybe they know they cannot do your “special songs” justice. I’d ask for more clarification.

Could you also see if their two hours of time will start after they play your special songs so it doesn’t take away your jazz music time?

@mkline2003:  So why not have piano for 2 hrs, recordings of your “special songs”, and then 2 hours of jazz band?

Or would you rather have a DJ playing more “dance” music all night?

It really depends on the feel you want the wedding to have.

@KatNYC2011:  That’s what I’m thinking – that these are songs outside their normal repertoire, and that’s why the band wants to do a recording for the Big Deal songs. Particularly as OP mentioned that they’re a jazz band?
