I am trying to figure out what we should be ‘getting’ with our lovely barn wedding. This is the first time the couple have rented out their barn for a wedding. (Their own wedding was in their barn).
What should be included in the fee for the venue? I got thinking about it, and shouldn’t the cost of portable bathrooms be included in the cost? What about insurance? It’s time to drop off a payment, but I’d like to get a few things in writing before i do (they are aquaintances, but it is still a transaction, right?)
I’d appreciate any advice you can offer, especially if you have any tips for things I am not even thinking about. THanks in advance!

Seriously? No one else is having a barn wedding? D’oh!

Well I am not sure about where you are but here in the wine country the ONLY thing you got for renting the barn was the barn. Everything else (insurance, potties, tables, chairs etc) was seperate and my responsibility. That is why I opted for an alternative venue.

We were in a similar situation with a private barn. Our rental fee was $1200 and included 2 deluxe (flush toilets, sinks with water) potties. We had to take out private insurance for $1,000,000 plus alcohol insurance seperately. We rented chair/tables/linens from our caterer. Depending on the situation they may or may not include bathrooms (when we were looking we saw both options). The delux bathrooms cost about $500-600 for 2.

I wouldn’t count on the rental including anything but the barn itself. Anything else should be discussed. they may be willing to throw in something else, but don’t assume.

Thanks for your replies.
We are paying $3000 for our barn rental (which is pretty pricey for our very small town, about 1.5 hrs east of Toronto…rural area). I have contracted out for the chairs, tables, chaircovers etc, and i know the insurance is extra (@$250). I am starting to think that for $3000, she should be at least providing potties. I don’t expect anything else, but I’d like to know if that seems fair, since it’s one more expense I’d rather download onto someone else if possible. 😉 Just not sure if that’s something that would be considered outrageous to expect of her.

I looked at several barns, and what was included was all over the place. One barn was similar to what you’ve mentioned- several thousand, and NOTHING was included. They even double booked weddings on Saturday, which I think is ridiculous for what they are charging.
The venue we ended up going with ($1800) includes bathrooms, bar set up, tables & chairs (some completely free, some at a very low fee), million dollar insurance coverage, and heat. They have been great to work with and I’m glad we waited to find them. We also have free use of an extra cottage type building on the property for the groom/groomsmen to get ready in.
For $250 extra, we’re renting a nice cottage on the property to spend the night of the wedding in. It’s adorable.
