@chrispygal: I don’t see anything wrong with it. People are going to tip or not tip. I’ve been to full open bars where the bartender still had a tip jar. No big deal.

I voted for no tip jar, not because it’s “tacky” though. If you do plan on tipping your bartender, your tip should be enough. If you put the tip jar out your guests will assume they are responsible for the bartender’s tip that night. Where it sounds as though you’re providing everything else for your guests, it wouldn’t make sense to the guests to see a tip jar for the bartender. They won’t know that you plan on tipping the bartenders seperately.

I wouldn’t do it…it wasn’t allowed at our venue, but I don’t really like the idea. Whenever there is a tip jar at an event and I forget cash, I feel so guilty getting another drink. Your guests can always slip the bartender a tip…

I wouldn’t – because as pp have said, I never have cash on me and I would feel bad going up to get a drink and not having any money on me. Or, if I did have money on me, it would be $20s from the atm – not singles.

@Miss Tattoo: I only said it because she used it in her poll! This is my first offense! I beg pardon!

I’m planning to make arrangements for giving a tip and having it in writing that there is to be no tip jar.  I find them in poor taste.

I paid my bartenders (friends) well ($150 each) and then let them put a tip jar out. I know one Brother-In-Law gave them a $20 at one point (it was an open bar which is unheard of on FI’s side, so nice surprise for them) just for putting up with their antics. I’m not sure how much extra they made, but I think they did pretty well. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it….if people don’t want to tip, they won’t!

I decided not to have a tip jar and instead asked the bartenders what they usually receive in tips and gave them that amount (they said $50-$100). We took care of everything else at the event and didn’t want our guests to worry about tipping. It really just depends on what you are comfortable with.

Most weddings I’ve been to have had a full open bar with a tip jar. I guess I don’t mind having one since that’s what I’m used to. If you already plan on giving the bartender a tip I would probably forget the tip jar. Like a PP said, if you don’t have the jar out there and people want to tip then they will do so. As long as you know they are going to get the appropriate tip at the end of the night from you I think you will be fine.

I’m going to say most weddings I’ve been to had a tip jar. I always make sure to bring some cash so that I can tip the bartenders.

Nope….I refused to let them have them and told them we’d take care of them at the end of the night. We did, and I think they were quite happy. 🙂
