FH’s nephew is turning 1 next month and we have no idea what to get him. Clothes and savings bonds are definitely out as he has plenty of both. Does anyone have any ideas of what is a good gift for a 1 year old. Money is not an issue as we are willing to spend on good gift. I’ve never been around really young children so I have no idea what a 1 year old needs.

I always get bath presents for 1 year olds. Those bath crayons that kids can draw on the tub are always fun, squirters… babies spend so much time in the bath tub you can’t go wrong!!

Educational toys. Check in that section and see what’s suitable for a one year old. They have hte ages on the boxes.

At that age, your gift is really for the parents. The kid is too young to know it’s his birthday! Is there anything that you know the parents would like for him to have, or something that would involve the whole family? I think books are a great option, as the family can read them together and they’ll last a long time. Or you could give a gift certificate to a restaurant you know the parents like and offer to babysit for the kid for free while they go out.

My (soon to be niece) just received some of the following for her 1st bday: kiddie pool, picnic table set, radio flyer wagon, and a disney princess ride-on toy (they also make Handy Manny for boys). Also, sometimes the parents will make “wish lists” at Toys R Us that have come in hand for me, and Red Envelope usually has some really nice sentimental gifts. It took me forever to figure this one out too. It is fun to be an auntie though! G’luck!

our good friend’s baby just turned one. she likes things that adults get to use b/c she likes to mimic her parents. a toy cell phone, remote control, keys. i know it’s not a lot of money to buy these things, but she’s holding that remote control every time i see her!

Everytime any of my male nephwes turns one, I give them a toy drum. They always go down really well as that is the perfect age for starting to play with a drum. Boys especially seem to have the best time banging away!

@plantains- i bet the parents love the drum lol!
I like snuggly tactile things, like blankets and stuffed animals.

I always get babies that age books or clothes–two things I think the parents are grateful for since the kid doesn’t know the difference.

1-year-olds are really into sorting and stacking and putting things in and out of their containers. I highly recommend something that sorts by shape, or those stacking rings. My daughter will completely empty out her drawer in the kitchen and then start putting things back, she’s 15-months.
The cell phone or remote is a great idea too!

When I buy gifts for kids birthdays they are almost always either an educational toy, book(s), or clothes. When the child is as young as one, sometimes I ask the parents what they could use for the child at that time.
One of my favorite places to get an educational toy is Leapfrog.com. My niece and nephew love the things I get for them there.

I get one of these for all our niece’s and nephew’s first birthdays. They love them!!! They love pulling the puzzle pieces out and pushing the stool around as they start walking. 🙂

@gerbera – that is SUPER cute! I think I want one for our DD 🙂

They come in pastel for girls!
Seriously, ALL our nieces and nephews LOVE them. It’s a great keepsake too. 🙂
It usually takes 3-4 week to personalize and you can almost always google a coupon code. Just ordered one for our niece/goddaughter’s 1st birthday. 🙂
