Before we got engaged we did a lot of talking about where we wanted to have it, and I did tons of research for pricing. Fiance was the one who picked the date. One day (a couple months before the proposal) he said to me, “You know there’s a holiday in May.” And I was like “oh yeah, do you want to do something?” And he says “Yeah. Get married.” I almost fell over thinking for a second he meant we should get married in 5 months, but then I realized he meant next year.
The engagement was really just a formality for us. We’ve always talked about getting married, and we were even going to visit our top venues in May, whether we were engaged at that point or not.

We really decided that we wanted to marry each other in Jan. (my lease was ending in June and I wouldn;t move in with him unless we were engaged) so I knew it was going to be before May. But I wanted to get married in the Fall, so I started planning. By March, it was just a matter of time and I wanted to lock in the venue, so we put the deposit down. Then I went dress shopping, because I didn’t know how long it would take. But I found my dress and it was on sale, so I bought it. They said it would take 3 months, but it only took 10 days. So I had my dress for a few days when he *finally* proposed.

Before the ring, I just know I wanted a nice wedding. As for the details of what make it nice, I didn’t plan.

my guilty pleasure is buying wedding magazines and reading them alone and then throwing them out or hiding them! if my BF saw one I will be in a close friends wedding next year so I could use the “looking for a bridesmaid dress” excuse. i have browsed for dresses and have one in mind that i love. hopefully BF follows through in the next year or so that they company won’t discontinue it! haha. other than that, no plans though.

I haven’t planned anything. Honestly, thinking about all the details that go into a wedding stresses me out, in a bad way. I think about the honeymoon. Cause isn’t a honeymoon just like any other vacation, only sexier? I can plan the crap out of a vacation. That and apparently my guy has an image in his head of the wedding he’d like but he doesn’t want to share. Honestly, in the end he’ll probably plan a lot of our wedding. But it’s mostly because he’s worked in the food industry his whole life, catered a bunch of weddings and has attended even more. I’ve been to one. Ever. The only thing I really look at are rings.

My best friend is awaiting a proposal soon as well so our guilty pleasure currently has been looking at different venues/ dresses / cakes / etc. My SO and I have discussed Oct 2012 as our date so I voted for date and location because we know we’ll be getting married in Fl.

Besides the whole marriage and pretend kid in highschool (senior year) I purposely wouldn’t let myself look until it was discussed and serious. However, after he popped the question it was pretty easy to figure out what I did and didn’t want based on the millions of other weddings I had been to.

@W8ingBee: Great poll! I voted for “have everything planned, but nothing paid for.” We have a wedding date, venue picked, his ring picked…I know where I will get my dress, flowers. My uncle will be the officiant, I have friends who can do the photography and make up. My engagement ring is being paid for and THAT is why all this is planned out already. After we chose a date together he said I can go ahead and plan. I’m working on a master’s and I have three weeks off in between classes. I used my 2 week vacation from work and school to basically plan all this out! lol. A deposit on the venue is pending! It will come reallyyyy soon. We plan to get married in June ’12 so if I wait for the actual proposal, we will only have like 6 months to plan a wedding, which to me will not be enough time financially speaking.
I had to edit this post to also say that we know which company we’ll book our honeymoon through and I have Word documents for dresses, venues etc. I also have back up venue/wedding ideas and know where SO can get his suit from and what type of bridesmaids attire I’ll have. Basically, all we are waiting on is more $ for deposits.

- Wedding: September 2011 - Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California)
None. I thought I wanted to get married in the fall and that I wanted to elope. At least I got one of those! 🙂

I have only been engaged a short time (since April, yay). He asked whilst we were in Europe and within 4 weeks of being home I had the ceremony location, ceremony music, reception location (restaurant so catering, chairs, cutlery, crockery etc included), photographer and dress sorted with deposits paid and a date booked.
Fiance and I have been together for 6 years and I always joked that I would have it booked faster than he could blink.. he didnt realise how serious I was haha.

we booked our venue on our date, contacted the church (who we meet with in 2 weeks) and booked our photographer all before the ring. i had been in talks with a videographer but now that i have the ring it is okay to keep booking 🙂
oh, and we booked our engagement party location, date, and time about 3 weeks before the ring because we wanted it in september which is only in a couple of weeks. everything was booked!!

What a great poll! I, like many others, have a vested interest in planning. Probably more than most since I know my ring is being paid off and the question is getting popped pretty soon. We’re probably having a budget wedding and a long engagement, so I definitely want to get started because if the wedding is going to be mostly DIY, then I want it to look like it’s not (I’m kind of a perfectionist), so that means I need plenty of time to do projects and crafts so they don’t look rushed and crapcraft-tastic, but elegant, like the items were professionally made. The future hubby agrees and loves it when he catches me planning. I think he’s more excited than I am-and so far he’s been plenty oppinionated. I think I’ve got a groom-zilla on my hands!

I know what I would like, but I know as soon as I am engaged it will be joint decisions on everything, so things could change alot!

I have a lot of things bookmarked and magazines dog-earred to things I like, but nothing official yet. Well, we have our honeymoon agreed upon, but not booked or anything.

We already had bought the ring and were waiting for it to come in and then waiting for him to propose… While we waited I started looking at venues and asked him about a few… but that was it.
