So I’m born and raised in Southern California and the future hubby is from Chicago. So just to give you some backround on our style so far. We are having a church wedding then beach reception. Our colors are yellow and grey & although it wont be black tie formal we dont want it super casual either.
He is so sweet and letting me do the wedding how I’d like it “very so cal & beachy”…But he is still a big city boy at heart and I can’t help but feel like he’s a little bummed we arent doing it in Chicago, so I’d LOVE to bring a little city life into our reception.
So my question would be- what are some cute ways to tie in his proud Chicago roots to the reception??? I’m thinking maybe in the place cards, menus or decor somehow but I’m kinda drawing a blank on how to execute it well and tie it in nicely…
I’d love to hear some ideas on how to create “the beach meets the city”!

It is so frustrating not being able to post pics yet!
If you have a wall at your beach reception you could do a stencil of the Chicago skyline and project it with a light onto the wall
Table names could be Chicago names that are meaningful to him. You could get those 2 sided frames from IKEA (99 cents)and have a pic of a Chicago landmark- Willis/Sears Tower, Wrigley Field, Michigan Avenue, or Navy Pier.–on one side and an explanation of the significance on the other side.
Even if you are not doing assigned seating you could incorporate these easily.
What about a surprise treat for a late night snack-Chicago deep dish pizza? I’m sure there are other foods Chicago is known for. Or, you could do mini versions for appetizers.
Garrett Popcorn or Frango Mints for favors?
Obviously you would only do some of these things.

Garrett Popcorn is one of our faves-what an excellent addition that would be-We are having a Candy buffet as favors so we could definitely add that to the table! Also that website has some cute stuff-Thanks so much!

My first thought was to have people give him snowballs to remind him how great it is to live in So Cal, but it won’t be snowing just yet in early Oct (it better not!). Maybe snowcones would be cute.
I saw a crazy groom’s cake at indie wed that was made to look like a deep dish pizza, cubs hat, Chicago Hot dog, popcorn, etc.
If you’re doing a photobooth/screen to take pics in front of, it might be cute to have a Chicago Skyline background. If it’s a DIY thing, you could project the image onto fabric and paint it on. Could be super cute if it’s blackout fabric and little lights are cut out (stars, buildings) …with a light on the other side shining through.
You could dance to My Kind of Town (Chicago is)- or sing it to him! Not if you have a voice like mine though! Yikes!
Maybe there’s a groom’s gift you can get him that reminds him of his hometown (but somehow doesn’t make him too wistful).
Is there something in particular that he mentions about Chicago that he likes? Sports teams? Museums? Winter?
Funny, you’re looking for Chicago stuff, I’m looking for stuff that grows freely in Cali!

On second thought, snow/snowcones kind of seems like you’re saying “I live somewhere better than you.” Apologies, the weather has been terrible & I am just ready for warmth.
What about vintage photos/ postcards? http://www.spudart.org/blog/images/2005/chicago_beach_full.jpg I think there are poster versions of this sort of thing.
Retro gov’t stuff: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/wpaposquery.html<
Paper skyline napkin rings?
Hurricane candle holders with skyline outlines?
Most of the pics of the Chicago Skyline include at least lake Michigan, if not the beach.
Quote from a Chicagoan in a speech? Trip to chicago for bachelor party?

Wow. Lots of great ideas! I may have to snag some for myself. 😉
We are using el stops as our table names. A photo of the location with the el stop sign graphic and a brief story of the signifigance to us.
I do love the idea of bringing in a late nite Chicago snack. Lou Malanatis deep dish can be mailed all over and comes in heart shapes. Portillo’s Italian Beef can be shipped nationwide as well. Brings a little of home to Cali!
