Our wedding is booked for October 2013 at Bear Mountain Inn, NY. I read some really great reviews about the venue on several wedding sites, and I’m feeling confident in our decision. A few things are slightly concerning, though I think they can be worked out. I just wanted to see if anyone else had an October wedding at the INN (not the Lodge). If so,
– October is Octoberfest at Bear Mountain. Apparently the traffic is HORRENDOUS trying to get onto the property on a Saturday in October. I’m wondering if anyone experienced issues or has any suggestions?
– We have room blocks reserved at the Lodge and the Cottages. I’m planning to rent a shuttle/limo for guests. Any experience or recommendations to transport guests to/from the lodge and the INN? I’m also going to offer the Holiday Inn as an option since it’s only a few miles down the road (in which case they’d need their own transportation).
– We’re doing both the ceremony and reception there. I plan to take pictures before the ceremony to take advantage of the daylight. It’ll be mid-October, with the ceremony on the deck overlooking the lake. Any experiences with the ceremony lighting? Wondering if we should plan to add some special lights on the deck just in case.
– any other thoughts or feedback/suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks and cheers!

We went to go check the venue out in the middle of Octoberfest- and the traffic was pretty bad! the main road to the inn was particularly clogged, but maybe you could research alternate routes?

I did not get married at Bear Mtn Lodge, but had my reception at Highlands Country Club (about a mile away from Bear Mtn) and ceremony at a church near by in Garrison, NY. Our ceremony was on Sunday 10/21 at 2:30pm.. a lot of people were late to the church because of the traffic from Oktoberfest. Some people didn’t make it to the ceremony and just made it to cocktail hour.
My husband and I drove up to the area on Saturday (10/20) for our rehearsal and we got stuck in the Oktoberfest traffic, the thing is it’s only a 1-lane road getting up there (at least from north NJ where we are coming from) and traffic get’s horribly backed up from everyone trying to get into Oktoberfest. If your guests arn’t staying at the lodge, I would highly recommend spreading the news by word of mouth about the traffic and let guests know to plan for an extra 30 mins- hour to get up there.
Also, our wedding did not fall on a football weekend, but you may want to check to see if there is a West Point home game on the weekend you get married too. It may not effect you since your wedding is on a Saturday, but there is bad traffic in that area on Sundays when they have a home-game.
Good luck with everything! October is a beautiful time of year in the area, you’re going to have amazing pictures! 🙂

Thank you for the tips!! (sorry for the delayed reply). Very helpful. Most people will stay at the lodge, so that may help since they can kind of turn off the road earlier and we’ll have a shuttle pick them up for the ceremony. I’ll also check on the football schedule, good thinking.
