Ok, so we were thinking of renting for another year and then buying a house. Annnnd then STUPID ME started looking at Zillow because *technically* we would be eligible for a mortgage and *technically* we have a downpayment. And I found a gorgeous — GORGEOUS — house for $185k on…get this, 5.5 acres of land!! I have always wanted land and to live in the country again since I grew up in the country, and this place is just gorgeous. However it is not in the exact location that I pictured myself living. I want to end up living closer to where my parents are now, if not buying their farm from them eventually. But it is just gorgeous and I can’t get this house and yard out of my head. Plus the PRICE…holy crap… It went down $30k already from the original asking price since it has been on the market for a while.
Talk me off this ledge!

There’s probably a reason it’s sitting on the market….a lot of places look great in photos. Not so great in real life.

saratiara2: True. It’s a bit out of the way, but to be honest a fixer upper house on land is a dream of mine! I wonder if it is still on the market due to it being out of the way and also because it is on over 5 acres of land. I know many people aren’t interested in having land because of the maintenance. I do not think now is the right time to buy…but it’s so tempting to contact the agent “just to look” haha.

I was you in October. We bought the great property (couple acres, two houses!) even though we weren’t quite ready to move yet. It’s bringing in 2.5x the mortgage in rental revenue, so we’re walking a each month with $600 earned after the mortgage and all bills are paid. Tenants are paying our mortgage, AND we’re earning extra cash while I finish grad school.
Buy that sucker, sometimes the “too good to be true” was simply a great deal waiting for you to come along!

Go look at it; otherwise you run the risk of it becoming “the one that got away” in your mind. Some things are meant to be, you never know.
And excuse me while I hate you a little bit for getting to live in an area where you can buy a house for under $200,000.

Go look. It’ll either be wrong, or you end up in a beautiful house. If you love it, then now is a great time to buy as interest rates are still historically low (though are starting to increase a little). If not, then no harm.

Go look at it!
when we were looking for homes, I found one on Zillow that looked perfect. Then we looked at it in person and it was easy to make the right decision.
After you see it, you can decide if you truly want to stick to your timeline or if this house is worth giving that up. Also, there are lots of factors that will be outside your control in the home buying process. Someone else may also be looking at that perfect house on Zillow tonight!

Thank you all! I will try to talk my husband into at the very least going to see it. 🙂 It truly is gorgeous and the kind of house I would want to live in. Granted 5 acres is a lot especially with me having a busy career, but I think it would be worth it!
