A couple of days ago I was having coffee with a friend and we started talking about Halloween. She told me that she is one of those people who pretends they’re not home and doesn’t give out any candy.
I was surprised at this, because I think that’s a really crappy thing to do. I mean Halloween isn’t for everyone, but you can’t find it in your heart to buy a bag of cheap candy and leave a bowl on your porch if you don’t want to talk to kids or something? I also think it’s selfish because those people trick or treated and got candy once and now they can’t do their part? Ugh.
As you have probably guessed I love trick or treaters. I think they’re really cute and I like seeing their little faces light up when I dish out that sugary goodness. I feel like it’s my duty to be one of the ‘good houses’ who will be like ‘take 3 candy bars, kids!’ because I loved those houses so much when I was a kid.
ETA: I don’t have a problem wth people not liking Halloween or not wanting to talk to kids. Leaving a blwl on your porch is fine with me. I just dislike the idea of people refusing to give back and do their part in a tradition they enoyed and benefited from as kids. This is one of those things I get inexplicably ragey about.

I really don’t like Halloween. I usually just leave a bowl of candy out. I probably won’t this year because we live in an apartment complex and there aren’t many kids.

@Ruby-Redshoes: I love seeing the kids in their costumes! If I were a parent with small children though, I would have to take serious precautions to ensure the candy thery received was safe. There are too many sickos out there now, compared to when I was a child.

I don’t remember trick or treating too much as a kid (houses are a mile at least apart) but now that FI and I moved to the “big city” (town of 500, but we have neighbors!) I am so excited for trick or treaters! I love seeing their cute little costumes and handing out candy! I can’t wait to dress up our kids one day!

@Ruby-Redshoes: We don’t celebrate halloween here but I have never understood encouraging children to 1. Accept sweets off strangers and 2. Encouraging kids to eat sweets. So I guess I would be with your friend in not supporting trick or treaters

I love seeing the little kids! I hate getting the older boys who come around after 9pm.

I live in an apartment, but I wish we had trick or treaters come by! I think it’s fun to see all the kids in their little costumes… and it’s a great excuse to buy a boatload of mini Twix bars.

Meh. I love Halloween and an disappointed when I only have a few trick or treaters. But I understand why somebody else wouldn’t want to spend their money giving out candy to other peoples’ kids too.

I haaaate costumes (like I have a phobia of masks and face paint and it is not a joke), and therefore I hate Halloween.
But I suck it up for the lil guys! I just can’t ever be alone on Halloween, so I have someone (usually DH or BIL) stay with me and pre-screen the trick or treaters to make sure I won’t pass out or something. They save me the cute ones, I guess. Even though we don’t decorate, I like to be a “good house” like @Ruby-Redshoes said and give out good candy, and lots of it!
It’s also a fun way to get to the neighbors and their little ones.
My in-laws are all jaded and keep the lights off and hide too. I always tell them to stop being such old scrooges.

Awwww that sucks. I hated houses like that when I was growing up. I love trick or treaters. The costumes are fun and I love seeing their reactions when we bring out the full-size candy bars. It’s also nice to say hi to the parents and meet new neighbors who have recently moved in.

We have tons of trick o’ treaters that come through our neighborhood, but we leave out a bowl of candy for them. We’re usually doing something “adult” for halloween, so we’re not really around.

I LOVE halloween and this is my first halloween out of college (I lived in a college town that had a big greek community, so halloween was a big deal). I was sad i’m not going to have the awesome halloween like I used to, but I am so excited to see all the little cuties come to the door.

@Ruby-Redshoes: I love them! I love seeing all the kids so excited in their cute little costumes! DH will be working Halloween night, but I fully intend to sit on my porch with my pup and hand out candy 🙂

@Ruby-Redshoes: I like them but sometimes they can be little jerks. I like to hand out the candy from a bowl. Usually I’ll give them 3-4 each. But every now and then I get kids who take it upon themselves to stick their hand in the bowl and grab as much as they want. Darn punks!

I used to love halloween, but where we live now they start at like 4pm, DH and I don’t get home until 6:30, so by the time we get home we miss all the cute little kids, want to start dinner and keep getting interrupted by all the older greedy (barely in a costume) kids (like until 10pm its insane). I know this makes me sound old and cranky, but seriously, put on a costume and say “Trick or treat” lol.
