I’ve worked in high tech for years so don’t wear suits normally any more, but my favorite suite is from a boutique called Aritzia.  If you are in Canada they have Aritzia in pretty much any major city.  If you are in the USA I think they are in most major northern cities now.

Their stuff is good quality and stylish.  The only downside (for me) is that they only go up to size 10 and I’m sometimes a 12.

@mkendrick:   Since I’m just starting out and work long hours, my professional wardrobe is in very heavy rotation. I only have 4 matched suits (pants, blazer, skirt).

I wish I had more stuff, but now that I have two Theory suits, I cringe when I wear the Banana Republic one, despite having them all tailored at the same place. The OP expressed wanting to make an investment in her suits, and I personally regret my mid-market suits since I found that a slightly higher pricepoint nets far superior fit quality.

Victoria secret has some online. that’s where i got my one and only suit that I used for interviewing and periodically when i worked for a more “formal” company.  I’ve had compliments on it every time I’ve worn it haha.  Definitely have to get them tailored though unless youre a genius at buying online.

I buy almost all of my work clothes at White House Black Market. It’s really cute for younger professionals and doens’t look all frumpy, or come with a massive price tag like some designer stuff.

@MrsNewDay:  yeah, once I realized you’re at my current size that’s why I ETA that part about express – and banana is great, too. i don’t know anyone who doesn’t love banana!

Ann Taylor, banana republic, brooks bros. everyone who wears suits should have one perfectly tailored suit from Brooks Bros IMO.

Laura or Laura Petites, if you’re in Canada.

But the best suits I’ve owned are bought at Robinson (department store) in Singapore. For around 100 to 150 SGD, I get a suit that would’ve costed me $300 in North America.

I somehow mysteriously gets emails from a HK tailor who visits my city, but they charge close to 1k for a custom made suit. I probably would go with a Thai tailor, based on recommendations, for suits. OP, if you’re interested, I’ll send you the link/contact. (I think it would be close to $300 USD for a full set of suit/skirt or suit/pants)

@MrsNewDay:  they have  Theory at Nordstrom Rack and you can get lucky at Marshall’s or TJ Max as well! I bought at Theory blazer for $98 at Nordstrom Rack, but couldn’t find a matching skirt or pant. I came back to Canada and managed to find a matching pant and skirt for sale at a Toronto department store. That’s how I bought my first “expensive” suit, and now I really do see the difference.

I’ll try Brooks Brothers next. My mom loves Hugo Boss but that’s out of my price range.

@MrsNewDay:  I’ve found some really cool suits in… Marshalls and Burlington! they carry plenty 8-12 sizes. The prettiest and fancier set I’ve bought I got it there. It is a Tahari and it is gorgeous! My work allows for some dresses at meetings and two months ago I got work dresses at Burlington. Calvin Klein collection for $50. They are really nice. You don’t always find them but if eventually you’ll be using suits, it’s worth checking once in a while.

Also at the Calving Klein outlets. They have some really nice stuff.

Anywhere that isn’t too outragously priced and not a halter top. I’m a 34dd I can’t stand halter tops they kill my neck after just a few minutes. I’ve found a few at Target and Old Navy that I’ve liked.

@MrsNewDay:  Banana Republic for sure. They are a little pricy but almost every day of the week they seem to have a sale on with 30 or 40% off (especially Wednesdays for some reason). The quality is excellent…much better than Express. I shop there for dressy pant, skirts and dresses as they have a petite section that fits perfectly for me.

@MrsNewDay:  I’m also a lawyer.  I’m not sure of the shape of the ladies who are buying Bebe and Express suits, but I can tell you that as someone who is slim with a serious caboose, I would look ridiculous in suits from those places.  Tried them, looked like I was working the streets for a living.

I opt for more conservative options just to be on the safe side.  I also think conservative is key when interviewing (i.e. wear a skirt suit, not a pant suit).  I have some older Ann Taylor suits that are nice (I don’t care for her rebranding).  My most favorite suits, though, are as follows: Theory, Brooks Brothers, Hugo Boss, and my coveted, will never have another one, Armani suit.
