We started dating at 18/19 and got engaged at 24 (almost 25), so it was just about 5.5 years of dating. We got married at 26, about a month after our 7 year dating anniversary.

We have friends who have been dating for almost 10 years and still aren’t engaged, so there’s definitely no real time frame. Don’t rush things, but do have a conversation about where you see your relationship going!

carolynne:  We were married this past summer at ages 22/24 but dated for 6 years, were long distance for the first 3 years, and were engaged for about 2.5 years (met when we were 16/18, got engaged at 19/21)

We met and started dating at 18 and got engaged after 7.5 years at 26 ๐Ÿ™‚ After undergrad, I went straight to law school, graduated at 25, and was 26 when I passed the bar and got admitted to practice. He also finished grad school at 25. It was important to us to finish school first and figure out our student loan repayment before getting engaged (private graduate school in a high COL city). We’ll be together for nearly 9 years when we get married next fall, and it was the perfect timing for us ๐Ÿ™‚ I did start thinking a lot about getting engaged once I got into my last year of law school, but I’m really glad that we weren’t planning a wedding while I was studying for the bar; I would’ve been too distracted to study. Marriage is very important to me, but I would’ve waited as long as necessary for my Fiance to be ready. I couldn’t imagine my life without him and would rather be with him than marry someone else just to be married.

carolynne:  I was with Fiance for a year and nine months when he proposed (our two year anniversary is Thursday). I was actually quite surprised by the timing, though I had a feeling he was going to propose. (Edit: I was 27 when he proposed, turned 28 about a month later and he’s 26)

I spent 4.5 years with an ex, about a year and a half of which I was “waiting”. I realized about a year before we split up that I no longer wanted to marry him.

Got together at 22 & 23, engaged at 25 & 26 but we knew we wanted a long engagement. Just got married this year, both 28 (bdays only 6 mos apart). Everyone is different. Honestly, I was hoping for the magical/surprise proposal when I was younger, even before I met the man I wanted to marry. That was just my vision. But we’re a super team and we ended up having conversations about our future, so I knew it was coming. Though I was pleasantly surprised at the 3 year mark when I knew he actually started looking for a ring. :0) I have to say, if I’d been closer to 30, I wouldn’t be willing to wait more than a couple years. But, we were younger so I would have waited longer, but I’m glad I didn’t have to.

carolynne:  I voted 1-2 years because my Fiance and I spent some time apart. The first time we dated, it was for 9 months then we broke up. His work was more of a priority than our relationship at the time, and we both knew I deserved better. We first started dating right before my 22nd birthday and he is 20 years older than me.

We spent most of last year apart, and got back together this February. I turned 24 this year and he proposed in October. So if you count our relationship the first time around, we dated for 18 months all together. If not, we dated 8 months when he proposed. But I think our history is important to factor in, because its not like we were total strangers just starting out this February. We got back together knowing that we were “the one” for each other ๐Ÿ™‚

Fiance and I have previously been married, so even though I’m in my 20’s, we knew pretty early that we wanted to get married. He proposed right around 8 months! We plan to have a long engagement (he’s military working towards becoming and officer and navigator in the Air Force).

My Fiance and i started dating our Sophomore year of high school, we both graduated class of 2014 and got engaged summer of 2015. At the time we were together almost 3 and a half years. ๐Ÿ™‚ So we were both 19. We are planning on getting married 10-7-17. He will be almost 22 and i will be 21!

We met when he was 20 and I was 18, and started dating a month later. Maybe 6 months or so down the line I asked him to marry me as a joke, but before he finished laughing I knew I meant it and told him so. He then said he wanted to think about it for a little while, as we where both very young and the rekationship still very fresh. But I got my yes as he went down on one knee a week later ๐Ÿ˜€ Woohoo!

On my birthday, over a year and a new apartment later, he told me he had a surprise for me in the bedroom. It was a ringbox with a love letter asking me if I still wanted to get married and a simple silver band inside. Of course I said yes:-D

So really we were engaged after just a few months, but we did not make it official before we had the ring, 18 months after we started dating.

We started dating at 14/15, we’ll get engaged soon at 24/25 and married at 26/27. So in total we would have dated 9 years before getting engaged and 11 years before marriage.

We dated for 1 year and 10 months before we got engaged. We are coming up on our 2nd anniversary together (January 9th). I am 22, and he’s 24. We’ll be 23 and 25 when we get married. We’ve also been living together for a year and a half. Yes, we actually moved in after five months of dating, which was almost completely long-distance. Things moved pretty quickly, but everything came together and worked perfectly for us to end up together. We’re meant to be together. He’s everything I’ve ever wanted and more.

People move at different paces, and are ready for different things at different times. Many people I know were together for 5 or more years before they got engaged.

We started dating right after our 17th birthdays, and we were engaged a month after our 5 year anniversary (December 2014). We had a baby in March 2014, so that definitely played a role in our decision to get engaged when we did. Had we not had our daughter, we likely wouldn’t have gotten engaged until late 2015/early 2016. We’re not getting married until 2017.

Dating at 19/22, engaged 4.5 years later at 23/26. I was ready but also felt very young to be engaged, so would have happily waited several more years!
