My husband showed me the ring he was going to get me, and it was gorgeous, but too expensive. I ended up asking him to downgrade certain elements because my car was on its last legs. Now I have a beautiful ring AND a new car.

My ring (and proposal) were a total surprise. I had probably mentioned casually over the years that I didn’t like anything “flat”, but we never had an actual conversation about rings. He far far surpassed anything I could have imagined—shape, size and side design that I never would have imagined and absolutely love. I get tons of compliments on my ring, and even more importantly, I love it and wouldn’t have anything different! DH has mentioned getting anniversary rings to wear on my right hand, but I’d never upgrade this ring.

We never discuss rings at all, he just knew I prefered rose gold but that was for jewlery in general.

I always though I wasn’t going to like what he would choose, because once he left his search history in plain sight with really awful rings, but the one he actually picked I LOVED IT.

He got some help from my sister, but still the ring and proposal was spot on, loved everything.

I’m glad that you got the “surprise” you wanted, and that you love it, but it sounds like you yourself were involved since you sent ideas to your husband and y’all looked together. I’m totally not judging because my opinion is that women should be involved in this decision if they want to be, but if you really didn’t want to be involved then you would have declined to be involved at all. In the context of that, it’s surprising you are shocked that other women are involved to varying degrees in picking their own rings.

Personally, I think it makes absolutely no sense that there is an expectation that women should hve no input into a gift that their partner would spend hundreds/thousands of dollars on… not to mention that they are expected not to exchange an engagement ring due to sentimental value and that they will likely wear it daily. Any gift should be about what the recipient will like, but especially you’re spending that kind of money on that kind of gift, it better be something the recipient loves. But that might just be the pragmatist in me. 😉

I had no input or say in the ring choice and I LOVE it! He said it was obvious to pick rose gold because all my jewelry is rose gold and that technically is my favorite color as well. He said he went with a vintage + girly setting, since that’s my clothing style as well (I wear a lot of floral dresses in older style cuts).

Side note: He’s a video producer and a graphic designer so he’s got an eye for design in general.

My husband did a great job. He designed a beautiful, simple diamond solitaire. Even though we had never talked about it, he knew that I wouldn’t want anything elaborate or encrusted with diamonds. The setting is a little higher than I would have picked maybe, just because I sometimes bang it into stuff, but other than that, it’s perfect.
