Fiance and I are from Canada and are having a destination wedding in the UK (his family is there). The trip to the UK is taking up a lot of time and he wants to spend time with his family while he is there, so we are going to save a big honeymoon for our anniversary. We are planning on doing a short city break for about 4 days after the wedding, though. We’ve talked about a few places we’d like to go… Oslo and Copenhagen are up there but staying there would be quite pricy, I want to go back to Santorini but it’s a long trip for only a few days, and so I think we have settled on Spain.
I’ve only been to the Canary Islands, not the mainland, and Fiance hasn’t been. Where would you recommend? We want somewhere with lots to see and good food, but not a British tourist resort/beach type place. I’ve been trying to do research but there’s so many cool places. Or do you think that one of the Scandinavian countries can be done without spending an arm and a leg on accomodation and food? The flights are super reasonable and short, which would be nice.

How exciting! I recommend Barcelona, it has everything, culture, food, shopping and the beach. Or why not take the Eurostar to Paris? Paris in the summer is wonderful 🙂
Scandinavia is beautiful in the summer, I recommend going to Stockholm and from there to take a mini-cruise to Helsinki. The cruises are so cheap you will save on hotel if you take the night ships. Plenty of entertainment on board and with the hotel savings you could splurge on other things instead. My prime tip in Scandinavia is to take public transport if you don’t want to break the bank and tips anywhere is not expected, but something symbolic is of course appreciated. Enjoy!

I think Spain is a great idea. There are tons of beautiful cities to visit, and many of them are much more affordable than other European countries with stronger economies. I studied abroad in Granada and would highly recommend it, I think it would be very romantic for a honeymoon. The city itself is beautiful and quaint, with many narrow pedestrian streets and plazas with outdoor cafes and bars. For sightseeing, there’s the Alhambra, Generalife, the Albaicín, and flamenco shows (and many other things I’m sure I’m forgetting about). It’s also not far from the coast if you wanted to do a day trip to the beach. As for food, Granada is fun because all of the bars still do excellent and substantial tapas. I can’t speak to restaurants for sit-down dinners because I was a poor student and didn’t explore those much!
Also, if you’re open to city hopping, I would recommend Granada, Córdoba, and Sevilla. They are all historic and beautiful with lots to see.

By the way, fly with Norwegian airlines from London if you go to Scandinavia and look into Easyjet, Vueling or Ryanair if going to Spain. IM me if you will go to Paris with the Eurostar, I have a small voucher I would be glad for you to have for your honeymoon!

I lived 1.5 years in Spain.
My recommendation is Barcelona. It’s really touristy, but an amazing city, infact it’s my favorite city in the world. It’s beautiful, international, it has great weather, great food and drinks, you have the beach and it isn’t expensive. Close to Barcelona are many beach cities, but many of them I wouldn’t recommend because they are flooded with Germans, Brits and Russians.
I also love the South. A LOT. Andalucia is way less touristy than Barcelona and even cheaper. You can get Tapas with a glass of Wine for a Euro in many places. In the South I’d recommend to rent a car and go to Sevilla, Granada, Vejer de la Frontera, Ronda and the villages in between.

Another vote for Granada, my favourite city in the world, or Barcelona, my second favourite!

I loved the southern coast of Spain. Amazing paella and seafood everywhere, and the climate is really nice. Also vote for Grenada and Sevilla, which are beautiful and have very rich history.

We spent a couple of weeks in Spain while on our honeymoon, and it was all beautiful. I think my favorite spot was Seville, although Barcelona and Madrid were also very nice. We also spent a few days relaxing on the beach/by the pool in Majorca, which was a nice way to wrap up our trip.

I’ve been to Barcelona, Granada, Madrid, Cordoba, and Seville…my favorite is by far Granada. The Alhambra palace is so gorgeous and romantic! And the old Islamic part of the city has so much character. I’d recommend doing an Arab bath with massages, very romantic. Barcelona was a bit too touristy for me, although the Gaudi architecture is beautiful and worth checking out. I loved seeing the mosque in Cordoba, it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. Madrid has fantastic restaurants and museums. Seville was beautiful as well. I never made it to the beaches but I heard they are very nice as well.

I agree with other bees and will say Spain. It was the first trip my now husband and I took together. We had a week so we rented a car from Barcelona airport and drove east to Catalonia region. There are lovely towns along the coast where you can get amazing food and good wine. It’s an idyllic drive along the sea with spots for stopping and taking photos. We drove towards Lloret de Mar, up to Girona and hopped to Andorra for one night. I really liked Girona, it had this vibe as if time was passing slower in that city. And the colours…
Copenhagen is awsome, fun and really-really expensive. Oslo too, Stockholm a bit less. Although I’d still recommend Copenhagen for a short city break because it’s kind of special – interesting things to see and try. Best time to visit from late March-April to October. In the winter it gets real bad – rain, gray skies, rain and howling winds. And did I mention rain? In Denmark +2 degrees Celsius can be worse than -15 in Canada because it is very humid. Combined with wind the humid cold sort of creeps under your skin. And there’s no paella!

Thanks ladies. I think we will choose between Barcelona and Grenada. We will only be there for three nights, so not a Lot of time.. But somewhere we can go Back to. 🙂 we will be there the beginning of July. I think maybe we will do scandinavia in the future.

I am a little late to the party but I was going to suggest Valencia, it was a quick train ride from barcelona. Gorgeous and not touristy, lots to do and great food.
when you do have a chance check out stalkholm. It is also an amazing city. Gothenburg was a bit boring. Malmö is beautiful. The ferry is quick and inexpensive, it was easy to take the ferry to Denmark for the day. The only really expensive part was alcohol

Apologizes if I repeat anything that’s already been said. I haven’t read through all of the comments.
My husband and I honeymooned in Spain last July. We spent 10 days there, mostly in Barcelona and I absolutely loved every second! We also went to Costa Brava for a few days. I believe our hotel was in Begur. Begur is a beautiful coastal town. Cobblestone streets, cute shops, and the Mediterranean of course. Lots of romantic places to stay too.
Barcelona was amazing. We’re very active and love to walk, hike, explore so our days were pretty jam packed. Even though we did a lot, it was also very relaxing. We walked a ton and just explored the city- musuems, beaches, architecture… it was just so amazing. The food was great too. I absolutely have no regrets!

My vote is valencia – it’s an amazing city. REALLY easy to get to from the UK – easyjet and ryan air both fly there for cheap. Great culture, fantastic food and everything you’ve described on your wish list.
I’ve been to both Barcelona and Granada and although I liked them both (Barcelona especially!), Valencia is even better in my humble opinion.
