We stayed at http://www.hotelparispaix.com/

It was a super cute little hotel and within two blocks of the Eiffel Tower and Rue Cler. Also right by the river which made finding our way around easy.

For Rome we stayed at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d238524-Reviews-Hotel_Contilia-Rome_Lazio.html …. http://www.hotelcontilia.com/

Maybe we got lucky but our room looked nothing like the traveler’s ones on tripavisor.

Our room and bathroom were huge! The inside of the hotel is run down a bit but still very pretty (lots of marble everywhere). Great free breaksfast. We liked the location by the train station because it made our airport transfer easy but it was kind of a walk to get to the sights. Also it was wonderful being able to hear the music from a local guy at night. The reviews claim it’s “loud” but I thought it was fine and I’m pretty picky.

I can’t suggest hotels because I stayed in an apartment in Rome, but I would advise you to stay on the civita vecchia side and not the Vatican side. The Vatican is a really far walk from the rest of the stuff you will want to do in Rome, so stay near the city center or in the American quarter by the American embassy (tends to be overpriced, IMO).

we stayed at a small boutique hotel.  it was beautiful and walking distance to everything.  very close to the eiffel tower.  check out the rates and packages that they have.  when we booked, we got a great deal for 3+ nights.  it’s small but we would totally go back there.

We stayed in an apartment in Paris. It was super cheap and the apt we stayed in was awesome and had everything we needed. It was only 65 bux a night. We booked through http://www.airbnb.com.

For Rome I cannot speak more highly and recommend this place

They were AWESOME! Seriously! We stayed here during our honeymoon and it was the best place we stayed at the entire time! They were super friendly, the apartment was beautiful, close to everything and it was HUUGE! And! There were great restaurants around and super affordable. If you want to talk more about this place and the other I stayed at PM me. You can’t go wrong with this place!

My fiance and I were in Rome and Paris in Oct 2010.  We did apartments through VRBO.com.  Both apartments were great and the owners were super sweet.  Our apartment in Rome was right near Piazza Navona and in Paris we were near Rue Montmarte.  We really liked being in the neighborhoods and a little away from the hotels/tourist spots.  The aparments were also more affordable than most hotels we looked into.

For Rome, check out http://www.casadellapalma.it/ We were planning a trip to Rome last Easter and my friend highly recommended this place. It’s completely budget friendly and the owner is super nice. I emailed him a few times back and forth and he sent me room photos and such. Th and speaks English and German. They will even arrange for your airport pick up which is important in Rome as taxis try to rip you off. There are different room types including an apartment and it is cuter than a typical hotel. If I remember correctly we were quoted 89 EUR per night which is like $120 at the current exchange rate.

As far as Paris, you need to determine if location or budget are more important. If location is your priority, then you should think about what part of the city you want to be in as there are several differnt quarters. I’ve stayed on the outskirts in order to get a cheap hotel (near a metro stop) as well as in the city and even just a few blocks away from the Arc de Triumph with a view of the Eifel Tower (amazing). For the later, you will need to increase your budget. However, there are also options in Quarters (I forget the actual French word) 5 and 6 I believe which are more budget friendly and it is more of an artsy young area of the city. Next time we go, this is where we plan to stay to see a less touristy side of Paris.
