I feel like this is the worst time to start looking for venues and caterers. It seems like everyone is busy with holiday parties, especially with caterers. It takes days to get a quote. With two different caterers, it’s been 2 weeks and I still haven’t gotten the quote that they promised to send the next day!
I guess it’s an exercise in patience… or something.

@nomnom: I haven’t been inquiring of caterers, because we and our families are doing the food ourselves, but I am just finding the whole process and all the details intimidating to deal with! First meeting with a person about a venue today, yikes, and I’m on here trying to find out what we should ask him! :/

Yup! It took us 3 weeks just to be able to tour one venue and now it’s taking about another week to get the full quote from them. I never anticipated that I would be engaged for a month already and not have anything officially booked!

@nomnom: I didn’t really run into this problem, but I thought it was nice to see the venues done up for Christmas parties in the middle of the week. It was easier to get an idea of what things would be like.
It was hard to book a venue for this time of year though. That was a bit of a pain.

@nomnom: I would just wait until after the holidays are over. It’s probably annoying to the people that are trying to do a million things right now.

@nomnom: I technically started planning in Dec. but I didn’t contact anyone until after the holidays. Mainly for my own sanity!!

@nomnom: Not a problem for me, except a couple of venues were closing up for the holidays and not doing any more appointments until after New Years.
@LVoeBride: Are we supposed to have the venue booked within a month??? I’ve been engaged for a little over a month and I haven’t booked anything yet because no venue has stood out where I had to have it. Panick mode starting…

@jadlnc: Yeah, I see your point. Now I feel bad about contacting vendors this week! It wasn’t so bad when I made calls early in Dec, but it must be really crazy hectic from now until New Year’s.
@LVoeBride: @Jewelieee: I haven’t booked anything yet either! I feel like I’m really behind. On the other hand, we’re planning a small wedding, so maybe it won’t be so bad trying to get everything together…

I had the same problems, and I started planning in March… lol.

Technically I started planning last December. We went and saw our venue between Christmas and New Year’s with no problems. We didn’t really have any issues but probably becasue we started so late in December.

@nomnom: Yeah, I don’t think it really matters what time of year it is. Sometimes vendors are just really slow to respond. I’d throw a lot of inquiries out there and then wait for responses. Also, I always got a better response by calling than I did with e-mail.

This month I’ve really started to actively plan this thing and I am not really “bugging” anyone until the new year. Once January hits though they better prepare themselves for the calls!
So far I am just making notes on places I like – finding the info online, and making lists of things I need to ask about and potentially even book by certain dates.

@Jewelieee: I wouldn’t worry about not having your venue booked within a month of being engaged (I got engaged in Dec 2012 and we didn’t start looking at venues until April of this year). BUT depending on where in NY you’re located, you might have a problem finding a venue now for a June 2014 wedding. On Long Island, many venues (and photogs, caterers, etc.) book up a year or more in advance. If you’re upstate or something, I don’t think it’s nearly that bad but I can’t say for sure. I’d reach out to venues you’re interested in as soon as you can.

@stargazer102706: +1 Future Brother-In-Law is planning a wedding in NY and they booked their venue within a week of getting engaged this autumn for August 2014. They live in NYC but their wedding is in Beacon, NY.

The only vendor i had issues was with our photographer, she was booked soild with appointments and such. I booked the venue within 3 weeks of being engaged but thats only because we are getting married in June 2014 and were engaged in September 2013
