I upgraded after the wedding, less than a year after getting engaged. We both knew that the original ring was just a placeholder.

I will be getting a new ring for the wedding. So that makes a little over 2 years. We talked a LOT about rings before the big day but then he went and purchased something that looked nothing like what I wanted. And therefore I will be getting a new ering and wedding band all on the same day

I told him I don’t want birthday presents or christmas presents from him for the next few years, that he should just put that money towards the upgrade… I would like to upgrade my center stone in a few years – maybe for our fifth anniversary, when I will have had it for 6.5 years – but I definitely want to keep my setting so it can’t be too huge of an upgrade.

I had mine a year and a half.

It’s technically an upgrade, however I used my same stone as my center stone. 🙂

i haven’t upgraded and don’t plan to, but my mom did so i thought i’d answer for her!

She got married when she was 17 and her ring was a “chip” solitaire as she called it. She has no idea how big it was and I don’t remember either (it was stolen over ten years ago and she hadn’t worn it for a decade before that). Regardless, it was tiny but she wore it for like fifteen years. Then she lost a lot of weight and it didn’t fit so she just didn’t wear a ring for a few years. On her 20th anniversary she got an anniversary band that was like a row of marquise diamonds, like maybe 7 or 9 of them?

She wore that for about a decade, and for their 29th anniversary (my dad got excited and couldn’t wait until 30 years) he got her more of a real upgrade ring (i call it that because it looks like an engagement ring instead of just a band). It is huge, although I don’t know how big. Three oval diamonds, maybe 4cts total weight or so?
