…my job is pretty great in that I am out of the office most days and get to be out in the sunshine. However, on those days when I am stuck in the office all day, I feel stagnant, and i eat unecessarily. How do the other bees with desk jobs get in some movement?

I am at a desk all day long. When I have the time, I try to get up and talk to co-workers instead of e-mailing. I recycle pieces of paper individually instead of waiting until the end of the day. I take projects to the proofreading inbox one at a time (I’m a translator).
Mostly, though, I have to be active outside of work hours. I do Turbokick twice a week for an hour and FH and I go for walks on the trail by our house every evening it’s not raining.

Oh – and I forgot to add – I don’t keep food at my desk anymore. 🙂 Just coffee, tea or water, or any pieces of lunch that are left over.

I used to do the same things as charismaclassic. Going to talk to people in person and taking things to the copier or fax throughout the day instead of just once a day.

I also have a desk job, my office window is directly across from a park! talk about torture. I can see and hear everyone outside enjoying themselves while I am working hard wishing I was there. I find that if I get up and walk around for 2-3 minutes and catch some fresh air it seems to help. I’m thankful though I can open my windows and get a breeze…..

Well, I don’t get a TON of exercise here at work, but I do try to get extra movement in. I work on the sixth floor, so I’ll watch down to the cafeteria (first floor) 2-3 times a day, although I usually don’t buy anything. I go down to socialize with my friends. I also choose to use the restroom on the fifth floor instead of the one on this floor, just to get extra movement. Some people around here also choose to use their lunch break to go for a walk to get in some exercise. My office in in town, so when the weather is nice, my friends and I will walk to the local Dunkin’s (again, I don’t get anything) for the walk.

I take the stairs to go drop off or pick up documents (usually 3 floors below).
I bring my lunch and snacks for the day and ration it so I can eat healthy throughout the day.
I drink green tea throughout the day when I’m cold, or water when I’m hot – kicks the fake hunger away
I usually go out for a run right after work, so it brings my energy up for the evening.

I too work have a desk job. The only movement I get is going to the furthest bathroom and occassionally stopping by cubes to chat a little. It’s pretty sad.

Nice advice ladies. I try to keep healthy snacks at my desk, but they aren’t so healthy when I’m overeating them. I do try to get up and walk around when I can, but everything I need is right in front of me!
@Barker86- I WISH I had windows! I work in an ancient govt building and all of our “windows” are a whopping 1ftx3ft and they line the ceiling, covered with shades. No hope of natural light exists in this place!!

Yeah, maybe don’t keep snacks at work, but bring exactly the portions for your day, everyday?
Also, if your snacks are veggies, there’s no overeating these! 😉

I go to the gym on my lunchbreak a few times a week. Keep a gym bag in my car with plenty of clothes to change into.

I have to go wander around randomly now and then but mostly I don’t. 🙁 It is terrible.

I try to take walks around the neighborhood during my lunch break. There’s also a gym in my building so I have access to treadmills and weights right after work. Also, when I need supplies or files, I pick them up myself from the supply room as opposed to having them delivered to my office.

I also have a desk job! And I totally get up to talk to people and take paper to the shredder and things like that just to keep the day flowing! It can get really old just sitting at a desk talking to angry people! But I do find myself always snacking..very bad!!

I work out 4-5 days a week. And, I make sure I pack EXTRA healthy stuff for breakfast and lunch. I figure I’m at a desk, not moving, I don’t need junk in my system. I keep a nalgene bottle of water at my desk and keep it filled with water, tea, or crystal light sometimes. Most of the people i do R&D with are not here, so getting up and talking isn’t an option.
I just don’t enjoy walking around cube-land. Or in the shop area. It’s not ideal. There are machines everywhere, so it just doesn’t work.
Honestly, sitting at a desk 24/7 gets old, but I am used to it now. But, i am REALLY looking forward to getting away from the desk and on the ramps. It’ll be much more movement orientated.
Everyone here tells me, “don’t worry, you’ll gain weight like the rest of us!” but uh, i don’t eat hot dogs or fried chicken for lunch like them. Eating extra healthy for breakfast and lunch, plus getting some work outs in is all i can do
