- Wedding: December 2013
So, Fiance and I have been seriously considering applying to the Peace Corps as a married couple after our wedding, but I have a few concerns, and wanted to get some more opinions. I have already looked at a lot of blogs and other websites about the Peace Corps, but every review seems to rotate between “they are literally God” and “Just kill yourself now.” Granted, this isn’t even an issue yet, because the application process is very difficult, so there is still a huge chance we would never be chosen.
Anyways, I understand we would be living in relative (or extreme) poverty according to American standards, and I understand it would be hard, thankless work. That isn’t an issue. I suppose my worry is that I will be murdered, or held as a hostage, or something equally as awful.
My loving (read worried) mother sent me what feels like every article relating to crimes and murders of Peace Corps volunteers. Now, its got me second guessing myself. I know I’m okay with some risk. That comes with the work, but I’m not really okay with a high chance of one of us dying by the end of this.
I suppose I just need some bees who were in the Peace Corps, or who have had family in the peace corps to give me their personal experiences. It is something I have always wanted to do, and I hate to think of choosing not to do it!
