I don’t mean to be complainey, and I’m extremely happy with my ring. I was just thinking of this because I was looking at all the gorgeous rings on the sapphire thread. When my fiance and I decided on a sapphire, he said “Man I hope people don’t think we are trying to do the royal wedding thing.” But it has happened. Every other person says oh, it looks like the princess’ ring. Hearing the same thing over and over all I can do is sigh. Sometimes it’s funny. Recently I was looking at a venue and the woman there said “ohhhh pretty ring I got one of those too…wait is that your engagement ring? I do NOT have one of those.” Or I will have people point to their department store version of the ring and say look, it’s the same. So to an extent I don’t care, but I do. I’m looking forward to a few years from now when people forget about the royal wedding and my sapphire is still going strong. If anyone else is going through this, join my support group here on this thread. ๐

Sounds like a pretty combination. People aren’t always sure what mine is either. It keeps it interesting though, doesn’t it? ๐

My mother pretty much has a smaller (and IMO more tasteful/reasonable) version of Kate’s-formerly-Diana’s ring and people definitely made the comparison, even though my mom got her sapphire long before Diana did!

I always wanted a sapphire ring, not a diamond ring. My partner allowed me to chose my ring when we got engaged in May 2005. Once Prince William and Kate got engaged people started asking me if I got a sapphire because Kate made sapphire engagment rings fashionable. Ummmm no.

All of the time! It kind of gets on my nerves even though I know it shouldn’t- I just think it’s my ring not Kate Middleton’s or Princess Diane’s! (yes I am aware they both had the same ring- just have people referencing both)

Well I am an encore bride so quite a bit older than most of you. I was a freshman in college when Diana first got “the ring”. when I saw it then as a teenager I thought it was the most beautiful ring i had ever seen. ( I am not a huge diamond fan) Being young when I got married the first time it never dawned on me that I might consider anything but a diamond ring. Then when the ring made its second appearance on kate I once again thought it was the most beautiful ring. I got engaged two months after William and Kates wedding. I specifically told me Fiance that I wanted a ring like the Royal ring and told him had i had loved it for many years. So for me when people tell me it looks the Diana’s/kates I love it. I usually say right back that “Yes but my prince is much better looking” that usally gets a giggle and we move on. Plus mine is not an 18 karat sapphire. So it is IMO not as imposing. But i love it and love the man who gave it to me so anyone who doesn’t …Oh well it wasn’t bought for them. ๐

@Irishowl1976: “people started asking me if I got a sapphire because Kate made sapphire engagment rings fashionable.”
Actually, before De Beers started their campaign for world domination, sapphires were a much more common choice for engagement rings.

I have a right hand ring from my bf that is a pear shaped garnet with a small halo. The garnet is quite dark, so depending on the lighting it’s difficult to tell what color it is and even though it looks either black or red and is pear shaped, people have STILL said it’s just like the royal ring. Doesn’t bother me as it’s a right hand right, but I think it would bother me for engagement. I hate feeling like someone thinks I’m copying something (really silly thing to care about, but it sometimes irks me).

Um, no. lol My ring is only 1/2 carat and definitely does not look a thing like hers. But I had mine first!

@december bride:I like that response, my prince is better looking HAHA. Odd thing is, a few people in my family say my fiance looks like prince Harry. I didn’t even realize all the parallels…I swear I’m not trying to be a princess!

@Nellular: Well my Fiance is 60 years old (like I said I am an encore bride) but he still has more hair than prince William. LOL. I think he is rather dashing and looks some what like Sean Connery. That’s my story and I am sticking to it!!
