It IS expensive to live, but I just want to point out our pets and babies as mentioned above are completely optional 🙂 If we really couldn’t afford them or didn’t want to, we wouldn’t!

Just think of it as something “fun” to spend your money on! It’s gotta go somewhere, right?!

Oh my goodness!  What do they do at these vet visits???  I’ve only done the (I think 3) regular puppy ones and those have only run me $75 each.  Is $500 normal!?

Mine was $266 last week, check up, and heartworm meds to start June 1st! Our yearly shots aren’t until August, so depending on cost there, and maybe yearly bloodwork, $500 can come scarily easily!!!

We always try to look at it as ‘enteretainment costs.’ As in this baby bill is less than the cost of 9 months of sushi dates, alcohol, and yummy cold deli sandwiches I would have had 😉

@pinkshoes:  Well, we needed her year of heartguard, that is $70, then she had to be sedated $70 plus the cleaning was $50 for her ear, the visit is $60, we also got 4 frontlines ($50), also bloodwork was $70, and she had an ear infection so she needed a bunch of meds.  This was for an ear infection- not a yearly visit (sorry, I had said yearly!).  I only take her every three years for shots, or when there is a problem.  (She has lots of problems- as in -she gets hurt a lot!  She is a bird dog, so she gets into lots of things and we hike a lot and she has been battling this ear infection and it got really bad.)

It adds up fast.  I also go to a holistic vet that is amazing.  I also live in an expensive city.

@abbyful:  Amen! Being a “grown up” sure is expensive! I didn’t realize birth classes were so expensive! We’re not going down that road for years, but it doesn’t hurt for me to hear about these things now I suppose! Yikes! Random, but do you have pet insurance? We’re looking into it, so I’m just curious. I just found out how much a teeth cleaning costs for dogs at our vet and almost passed out….. insanity!

@indyJEEP:  I forgot to ask how much a teeth cleaning is- how much is it?  I guess they have to put the dog under….

@cbee:  It’s usually about $400.

@cbee:  Our vet charges $400, like OP said. I guess they have a “slight” discount for “smaller” dogs for $350 though lol
