mishybear :  They’re both very troubled people. Your friend is dangerously desperate and reckless. Her boyfriend is in a rebound relationship after parting ways with someone he still has feelings for. While his excessive spending does appear to be irresponsible (or irrational), it may also be beyond his control… or maybe the only way he feels he can maintain some semblance of control in his unhappy life. And he clearly does NOT want to get married. Her spending is entirely out of control. Watching her 99 cent purchase get rejected must’ve been painful to see. This is like watching a train wreck about to happen. Your friend is in need of professional help though she’s not likely to recognize it… yet. I’m glad you chose to cancel the visit to the jeweler. It would have been a waste of his time as well as yours.

I can’t IMAGINE asking a friend (or even a relative) to pay for my engagement ring. How little self respect do you have to have to stoop that low? I am not even sure if I’d ask a friend or family member to help pay for groceries or some sort of essential car repair or something if I was unemployed and in dire straights. What kind of thought process goes through your head where you think it is okay to ask a friend for money to buy something so non-essential?
