- Wedding: October 2014 - Bartram's Garden
We’ve been trying to plan our honeymoon for a while now, and I think we’ve finally narrowed down our options…
We really want to do Hawaii, but the pricetag seems a little intimidating (we have a $5000 budget). I know it can be done, but we are the type of couple that wants to do it ALL, and I’m not sure if we want to sacrifice the destination for the total experience.
Then I stumbled across Robert’s Grove in Belize.. they offer accommodations at a private island, all inclusive, for well under our budget (by almost half). All of the ammenities seem right up our alley: a perfect combination of relaxation and exploration.
Has anyone been to both places that can weigh in? Or with any other recommendations for somewhere that is warm, clear seas and beaches, lots to explore, with hotel accommodations fit for a romantic honeymoon?

I have been to both The Inn at Robert’s Grove and am actually currently vacationing in Hawaii (second trip). Both are great trips. The Inn is much nicer than the locations we have stayed at in Hawaii, but that is partly because we would rather spend less money on hotels and more on experiences. But The Inn is so affordable I didn’t feel like I had to do that in Belize. Hawaii is much more expensive. I had a great time in Belize. I snorkeled and we took a boat down the Monkey River, waded through the rainforest and saw monkeys and cool birds. And the beach at The Inn is beautiful and a peaceful place to relax when not doing activities. Hawaii is a different trip. We love Hawaii (specifically the Big Island) like it is a second home. We aren’t big beach sitters, and Hawaii has so much to do…tons of interesting hikes, so many different snorkeling spots, etc. We have been here for four days and have hiked probably 15 miles, kayaked with dolphins jumping around our boat, saw a humpback whale a few hundred yards away jumping out of the water while we were snorkeling, saw sea turtles on the black sand beach, and hung out with the locals at a very remote green sand beach (the sand us made from peridot!). It is amazing here if you like adventure. But it is definitely more expensive. This time we rented a condo through vrbo. That helps cut down on the overall costs of meals out. You really can’t make a wrong choice between those two options!
Sorry for the novel!

What time of year would you go on your honeymoon? I see your wedding is in October 2014. They have rainy season through December, so it wouldn’t be ideal to go there until January-April which is peak season. I’m headed there next week, but am dismayed by the daily forecast of rain. Just something to consider.

I’ve never been to Belize, but Darling Husband and I honeymooned in Hawaii this past Sep-Oct. Honestly, Hawaii is unlike any other place that we have been. Like namrie said, it is like an adventure. The islands have so much to offer as far as landscapes, oceans, water sports, hiking, waterfalls, kayaking etc…but also relaxing in Hawaii was probably the most relaxed I had been in years. It was just wonderful and the people there are so friendly and hospitable. The reason I voted for Hawaii was bc its unlike any other place and what better time to do it than your honeymoon.
However, its very expensive. We went for 2 weeks and without food/baggage fees it was close to $10K. Add in food, baggage fees, shopping etc it was over $10K. However, we said “its our honeymoon, we’re never going to do this again and for the first time ever we are not going to care about price tags (well to a point!)”. We stayed at some amazing hotels in Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. We don’t regret a single dime, it was a wonderful unique experience that we honestly prob won’t get to do for another 10-20 years.
If you can swing it, I’d say go for it without any hestitation!

@angelinamarie: We’re going to Belize for our honeymoon in May and are doing 8 days 7 nights for under 5k. We’re flying out from Philly for $400 each round trip. The flight cost and duration to Hawaii alone made us change our minds to Belize. We’re doing a Jungle/Beach package for $2500. The first 3 days we’re staying in a gorgeous treehouse and it includes drinks and food and two adventure tours *we’re doing a cave tour and and tour of Mayan Ruins in Guatemala. Then the last 4 days will be at their sister beach resort. Website is http://www.belizetreehouses.com We’re really excited! Orginally we wanted to do Costa Rica which is similar for beach and adventure but it would be rainy season when we go, so do check the climate in Belize for October.

@angelinamarie: Don’t fly all the way to Hawaii and then not have enough money to do the things you want to do. I recommend going to Belize instead. You’ll have an awesome time, and then you can save up to take your dream trip to Hawaii another year.
