I’m currently in the middle of this struggle with my little one…we started off using the Tommie Tippee bottles. It’s true that the nipple is shaped the most similar to a breast, but they haven’t been working at all for us. The problem we have with them is that the milk starts coming out before he is ready for it, and even using the slowest nipple it flows out too quickly for him. He’ll take it if he’s starving, but the rest of the time he starts crying, gagging, spits the milk out, pushes the bottle away…it’s awful!

Right now we’re using Dr Browns, which are better – he’s able to stop and take breaks while feeding and go more at his own pace, the way he does when he’s breastfeeding, but we’ve had some issues with spit up. I ordered the Breastflow bottles and can’t wait for them to arrive because they actually require him to make an effort and suck in order to get milk, the same way he has to in order to get it from my breast. The only other bottle I’ve seen that works that way is the Medela Calma, but they’re much more expensive than the Breastflow.

@LuluH:  You have to taste your milk. Trust me, you’ll know if it’s the issue (it’s gross….) Make sure to taste “old” milk–like, it’s been out for at least 8 hours or in the fridge/freezer for a couple of days. My milk “lasts” for 5 hours, but that length varies by woman. Some women’s milk is fine for a whole day while others lasts only 5 minutes. Freezing it will not take care of the problem.

The scalding is way easier than it sounds. It only takes about 60 seconds on the stove. You can also do it in a bottle warmer if you have to do it at work.

I hope your little guy was just stubborn, and this isn’t the case, but I wish someone had mentioned this earlier. We went through a bad 3 months…
