We thought my little sister was still going to be in Iraq at our wedding; luckily, she came home about 2 weeks before and was able it to make it.  Here’s some of the ideas we came up with on how to include her:

  • Put a picture of her up at the head table.
  • Skype with her during the reception so she could make a speech and still be a part of the festivitie (see our first dance, see the other toasts, etc…).  this one was kinda hard to work out since she drives convoys and never knows when/how long she’ll be going off base.
  • Have her video her well wishes ahead of time and play them at the reception.

Hope it helps!

One of our groomsmen was deployed for our wedding. We had an American flag in his place where he would of been standing.

@Mrs. Spring:

Love your ideas!

Can your best friend request leave time? Doesn’t hurt to try! Don’t know if a wedding is considered important enough to leave deployment though. 🙁

@Gerbera:  I don’t think it hurts to ask, but I know my sister couldn’t get leave for our wedding.  🙁  The only thing that she could get sent back from deployment for was if one of her immediate family members passed.  She wasn’t even able to come back for my grandpa’s funeral, or the birth of my daughter.  Pretty crappy.

@Mrs. Spring:

I’m really shocked she was unable to come back for your grandpa’s funeral. That’s crummy.

Coincidentally my Brother-In-Law was deployed when their maternal grandmother passed away and his leave was granted. Most recently when my other Brother-In-Law passed away unexpectedly over the holidays he was in Afghanistan and they had him home in under 36 hours.

I guess it depends on who your superior is. 🙁

@Gerbera:  It was pretty sad.  Maybe it also depends on branch?  My sister’s in the Air Force, and they’re just so strict about deployments and stuff even though they’re supposed to be the most “family friendly.”  Oh well; water under the bridge.
