I haven’t had a baby yet, so I can’t help you with personal advice, but I’ve found that new moms love when you bring them food that they can freeze and bring out for dinner when they don’t feel like cooking. They’re always so busy with the baby, and more than likely exhausted, so cooking for them will help a ton. If she’s breastfeeding, just be careful of foods that will make the baby gassy (if it makes you gassy, it’s definitely likely that it will make the baby gassy).

I think a nice leather journal (from Barnes & Noble) would be really nice. She could take a few minutes to collect her thoughts, and write her feelings, document all that’s going on around her right now, and have it forever. It’d be really nice too especially since she just had a baby! They have really pretty ones at Barnes & Noble too!

@puddingface: oh gosh. definitely do that for her shower! my fi works 12 to 15 hour days and i live two hours from all my friends and family so i had no one to help me. add a newborn on top of a 3 year old and house work, getting meals prepared was not easy.

Honestly my best friend gave me a really soft comfortable pillow to rest on during late night feedings. It was heaven.

I also got an “emergency” bottle of Pinot Noir (my favorite) from the gals at work. Yum.

Best gifts that I just got after my c-section were things I didn’t have to take home from the hospital.  Bringing gifts there totally suck since they just sit in the corner and then you end up having to schlep them down to the car later.
Best gift once we got home was the meal our neighbor brought over.  Everything was cooked and warm and all we had to do was dish it up.  Even brought wine and dessert.

@puddingface: oh yay! glad it all worked out and you got to give her something that means something to her, and not something that will die before she even leaves the hospital. lol.

thanks for the update!

to be honest, the best gift i received was my mom coming to my house and cleaning it from top to bottom! it was already pretty messy since i wasn’t feeling too hot towards the end of my pregnancy and didn’t do much cleaning, and dh and i were so overwhelmed with getting into the routine of parenting that we wouldn’t have had much time after the baby arrived either.

My favorite gift was a cleaning lady. After our baby was born my grandma sends her every other week! Even once would have been awesome though.

You’re a good friend!! 🙂

My birthday is 2 weeks after my due date. My mom asked what I wanted and I told her that I really didn’t have a clue. But like others said…I was thinking that “comfort items” would be nice…like socks, robe, sweat pants, etc…
