My girlfriend has just agreed to marry me!
We are both 38 and not looking for a big wedding. We want to go somewhere in the US that is both cool, romantic, special and just for us. No on else will be coming! Any suggestions greatly received.

Yosemite and Tahoe are two absolutely beautiful places, and I think they cater pretty well to elopements. Big Sur I’ve heard is really nice too but I’ve never been there. I’m also partial to Santa Cruz 😉

- Wedding: November 2013 - St. Augustine Beach, FL
Historical cities: Savannah, Georgia; or Charleston, South Carolina; or St. Augustine, Florida.
Beach wedding: Clearwater Beach, Florida (combine with trip to Tampa and Orlando, Florida); or Key West, Florida
P.S. Bear in mind that if it’s a same sex marriage that you won’t be able to have a legal marriage unless you marry in one of the states that recognize same sex marriage. Currently, they are: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington . Then my recommendation would be Vermont or Niagara Falls in New York.

Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard!

Mackinac Island? There is a lovely little stone chapel there – my cousin was married there with just a few family members in attendance. Afterwards we had lunch at the Grand Hotel (movie : Somewhere In Time).
It was so lovely!!

Point Reyes is really beautiful, a little easier to get to than Big Sur. You could stay here in a private cottage: http://www.olemadruidshall.com/
But this famous place in Big Sur looks absolutely dreamy for an elopement: http://www.postranchinn.com/

@indigop: We are hoping to get married at Yellowstone. The mountains as the backdrop sounds beautiful.

Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri. It is beautiful and so romantic.

I think you’re going to have to narrow it down to scenery, then look for romantic and cool! Do you want beach, mountains, lake, city? Is there somewhere you’ve always wanted to go on vacation in the US?

West coast near san fran, big sur has been mentioned and looks amazing.

@indigop: I second Big Sur or Yosemite. So beautiful.
(Also, if you end up in the northern california region, PM me. My cousin does legal weddings and LOVES it! She went to San Francisco City hall to try to help with marriages there when Prop 8 was struck down and was so bummed they weren’t letting non-city employees do it!)

@indigop: …this is an amazing place in Colorado, an old ghost town gone exlusive hot springs resort outside of Telluride…all inclusive and amazing!
