BF recently asked where the best place to buy a ring is. We have not discussed a budget yet so anywhere with a good selection and fair pricing will be a great start until a budget is set. Does anyone have any recommendations for a place in or around Chicago? Any places that should be avoided?

If you are looking for a custom ring I HIGHLY recommend Carl Schmelzle (or his brother, but I can’t think of his name) at Ed Schmelzle and Sons. The just have an office and workshop downtown- there is not a storefront, but they will source diamonds and basically create anything you want. Carl is also one of the nicest people I have ever met. He made my friend’s beautiful e-ring and I really encouraged my then fiancé to get my ring from him, but I think he was intimidated by the design process so he went elsewhere.
I got a wedding ring from the same place as where my DH bought the e ring, but hated it once it arrived, like 2 weeks before the wedding. I called Carl in a panic and he met with us, had a wax mold made a couple days later and finished the ring with several days to spare (and it was somewhat complicated- 3 rows of micropave on a domed band). His price was far below anything that we could find in a store or online. My husband also had him custom set my grandmothers engagement diamond into a necklace with matching pave on the slide as a wedding gift. After that experience my husband admitted he should have used Carl for the e-ring. A few weeks after the wedding, one of the dialmonds on my ering band fell out and Carl replaced it at no cost (this was not even his ring). My husband also had him custom make a sapphire band for a “push present” after our son’s birth. Everything he has made is beautiful and exactly what I described to him. I cannot recommend him highly enough!

Cresent jewelers has great customer service and products. The prices are also very fair. There are two locations frankfort Illinois and Lansing. I’ve had them rhodium white gold and it’s really great work. I’ve been to other places and my rings after rhodium were still yellowish.
They recently had them custom mame my sister engagement ring (with the help of her FI) and it’s absolutely beautiful she’s is thrilled with it. Bill was really great to work with I was not. It’s a lot of pressure to design a ring for someone else I changed things at last minute and they had it done perfectly and on time. I highly recommend them.

Dimend scaasi they got good reviews on pricescope , are based in Chicago, and have online store. I think they are more expensive than strictly online stores. B2cjewels.com has best prices ever
