I use Photoshop for all of my design needs. It’s user friendly if you’re not getting too complicated with it (I taught myself in a few hours of just screwing around). If you’re looking to get fancy, there are youtube tutorials for just about every feature.

I prefer Illustrator for this because of the vectors (never really used InDesign much).  Photoshop is easier to use, but is more useful for photography than text.

If you’re a college student, or faculty or staff at a university you can get the CS bundle for a lot less than the professional price.

Also, I don’t know how much this goes on now but waaaaaay long ago I got my first version of Photoshop for $50 on ebay from a photographer who was upgrading more than 1 version, so he wasn’t getting the discount on upgrading and just wanted to unload the old disk, so you may find an older version used for a deep discount.

+1 the Adobe Suite

But, to be real, if you haven’t ever used Photoshop and Illustrator, you probably aren’t going to be able to pick it up right away.

Edit – InDesign is meant for layout of PSD and AI files, if you are going to download the other two programs, might as well download that too

@squares:  I love InDesign for that reason, it preserves the transparency from photoshop.
