Newport is beautiful. You can rent a cottage on the beach for as little as 120 a night. San diego is also very pretty. Santa monica beach is more centrally located and while the beach is nor the greatest there is a ton to do. Nice restaurants, shopping, walking, people watching, the fair etc.. Hope this helps!

In addition to PP, I would suggest looking into Santa Barbra, Santa Cruz and Carmel.  Of the 3 choices I gave I would go to Santa Barbra if I could only go to 1.  It’s gorgeous, the beaches are less populated, and downtown is fun.

I used to live in Santa Monica.  If you hang out there all afternoon you will probably see at least 1 famous person and 100 homeless people.  It’s weird like that.. but it’s very fun and hip.  Very “Los Angeles”.. 😉

Why not rent a sweet convertible and roadtrip up the coast from LA/San Diego to SF? You can:

-Rock climb in Joshua Tree

-Play golf in Palm Springs

-do all sorts of stuff in LA; visit the Getty Villa on your way up Hwy 1 leaving the city

-Wander through all those sleepy coastal towns, like Santa Barbara (gorgeous! good food too! And cute wineries!)

-Get coffee and watch the surf at Big Sur; see Henry Miller’s home

-Hug a huge tree in Sequoia National Park (or a tree in Yosemite)

-Go to garlic festival in Gilroy (on the way to S.F.)

-Explore San Francisco and the Bay Area

-Get a mud bath in Calistoga

-Taste wines in Napa Valley

It’s a big, gorgeous state. Tons to do!

I might be a bit biased but Santa Monica rules! It never gets old to me. So many things to do, lots of great restaurants, shopping, bars, etc. The beach isn’t the nicest but it’s super fun. Venice boardwalk is nearby, which is nuts and great for people watching. Main St is a great spot for getting a drink or some dinner. There are even a couple small dance clubs. The pier is here. You can rent bikes and ride around the beach path. Third St Promenade has a bunch of awesome stores. And there are a bunch of beautiful hotels. Casa del Mar or Shutters if you want to be baller…the Georgian, Shangri La are cool. The Doubletree on 4th St is nice and centrally located. There’s also a Holiday Inn…lots of options.
