DH and I had our first IVF cycle a couple months ago that unfortunately ended in a chemical pregnancy. We just did our first FET. We went away for the holiday and I told myself I wouldn’t take a test with me but I stuffed one in my bag at the last minute (naughty I know!).
Last time when I got pregnant my urine scent changed into a very very strong, musky, overwhelming odor. When I researched it I learned that some women can smell HCG (weird!). It went away after I had my chemical. A few days ago I started smelling the same overwhelming musky scent that I noticed last time. I decided to test this morning at 7dp5dt (equivalent of 12 dpo) and got this:
Its MUCH darker than my positive test from last cycle (also 7dp5dt). However, today I’ve noticed that musky urine smell had faded a lot. Is this normal? Would I expect it to fade, or would it stay the whole pregnancy since HCG is still present and even increasing? I can’t find any information about this online! (Doesn’t seem to be very common.) Anyone have an experience to share?
I’m really scared to have another chemical pregnancy :(. Embryo looked good and lining was great (11mm), but it was last time, too. Beta isn’t for another week.
Do early pregnancy symptoms fluctuate? My lower back is aching and I have some light cramps.
Could this really be our rainbow baby after 3 years of TTC? I don’t want to get my hopes up.

I’ve never heard about pee smelling different, so I can’t help you there. Congrats and sticky baby dust!

Maybe the urine scent was just from something different ate over the holidays and isn’t related to the Pregnancy at all. Congratulations!

I know that before I had my chemical pregnancies, I had a wicked sense of smell due to the increased hormones. Maybe it’s just because you can smell better? 🙂 I think that’s an awesome line for 12dpo. Congrats lady!!

I can’t answer your other questions, but I know that early in pregnancy symptoms definitely do come and go. I really hope this is your rainbow baby! Will you be doing betas while on vacation or once you’re home?

Praying this one sticks for you this time!!! My symptoms came and went from both my transfers, but did not have a change in urine smell. My 1st FET and chemical I just had lots of cramping. My 2nd FET no cramping. Congratulations on your BFP!!!!

Yay! I am so hoping this baby will stick around, of course. I just wanted to chime in that when I get pregnant I also experience that weird urine smell, almost like what happens when you eat asparagus but WAY more intesnse. It has been much more extreme this time than any other pregnancy for me. I notice it changes in strength depending on how much liquid I drink, so if my urine is more diluted it isn’t as strong. I wasn’t able to find much information about it, but I also wonder if it has to do with IVF/FET hormonal support. My urine also changes in color and regardless of hydration, its consistently more yellow/dark than normal for me, so I did spend a good day or two worrying I had a bladder or kidney infection. I’m assuming it also has to do with liver detox and increase in blood flow/HCG. So, no real answer for you, but just had to mention that you aren’t alone with that one and I don’t think its just something you ate recently!

I didn’t notice a different urine smell but can definitely attest to symptoms coming and going early on!

We are out of the country so no betas until we get back, unfortunately!
thanks for chiming in! I’m so glad that you also get the weird urine smell! It’s soooo strong and distinct that it’s hard to believe other people don’t smell or notice it. That’s an interesting theory about it being connected to the fertility treatments. Makes sense! I did smell it again this afternoon… just not in the morning and it doesn’t seem quite as strong as before. But maybe I’m overthinking it. Are you still smelling it pretty strong? I feel like a crazy person sniffing around when I pee!

No advice, just want to say congratulations and I SO HOPE this is it for you!!

I can’t say I had that hcg-smelling spidey sense first time round but that’s a great line! Fingers crossed! Did you do PGD on the FE? I have my first FET in just under 3 weeks and I’ve done PGD and less than half of my frosties had the right chromosones for a sticky. This time the line is stronger, stay positive and enjoy your trip!

no we didn’t do PGD but I’m kind of kicking myself that we didn’t! Our doctor said he didn’t think we needed to do it since I’m young and all my testing looked great (we are MFI). It would have been a few thousand dollars out of pocket. If this one doesn’t stick I’m definitely doing it on the remaining embryos! That’s crazy how many of yours didn’t have the right # of chromosomes! I bet you are really glad you did the testing! I hope your FET is successful!

My urine smelt like wet hay for a couple of days before and after bfp but it faded quite quickly. I’m now 28 weeks so everything progressed fine! Everything crossed for you that this is a sticker!

That musky, overwhelming odor has been one of my unfailing pregnancy symptoms for three pregnancies now. I do notice that it fades, but maybe that’s also just part of getting used to it? For example, I tested positive in late November, noticed the smell very strongly. I don’t find out exactly how far along I am until Thursday ( had a crazy time switching ob’s :/ ), but some days I haven’t noticed the smell at all. So… I wouldn’t think of it as something to worry about.
I thought the urine scent thing was probably very common until I mentioned it to people, and they’d ask if I had an infection or something. Nope, no infection, perfectly hygienic… just stinky pee. My OB never seemed to think it was odd, though. 🙂
